What You Need to Change in Your Financial Strategy
Do you feel like you’re called to do big things for the Kingdom of God, but never seem to have enough money?
Your financial future is not hopeless!
Here are 3 mindset-shifts to help you start opening the heavens over your finances right now:
1. Find out where your treasure is.
There are certain necessities we must spend money on in order to live. This includes things like food, shelter, clothes, etc.
But then there is the money we spend out of our extra funds. When we track these expenses, we discover an interesting picture of our priorities.
This is because of a simple Biblical principle:
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” Matthew 6:21 NIV.
The truth is, we put our treasure — spend our money — on the things that are important to us.
I encourage you to find some time this week and look at this area of your spending.
Ask yourself:
- What common themes can I track where I spend the most money?
- Am I happy with where my “treasure” is going?
- What are my priorities in life according to my spending habits?
Then ask:
- Where would I like my treasure to be?
- Am I spending money on advancing my goals?
- Am I putting my treasure in worthwhile pursuits?
Get a clearer picture of where you are, where your treasure currently is, so you can move forward to where you’re going.
When you invest your money in where you want your priorities to go, your heart — your hopes, dreams, and passions — follow!
2. Above all, get wisdom.
After the death of his father King David, Solomon took up his father’s crown and began his rein. God chose to give Solomon a great gift. He told him to,
“Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” 1 Kings 3:5 NIV.
Solomon could have asked for the riches of the world or for a long life. Instead, he chose to ask God for wisdom to govern his people well.
God was so pleased with Solomon’s response that he gave him both wisdom and riches.
Solomon later wrote this about the difference between wisdom and wealth:
“Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves those who have it,” Ecclesiastes 7:12 NIV.
Solomon knew that money might make him a great king, but money was not what would keep him great. In our own lives, it’s important to understand that money is easier to attain — and easier to lose — than wisdom.
3. Use what’s already in your hand.
When God sent Moses to free the slaves from Egypt’s captivity, Moses was afraid that who he was and what he had to offer wasn’t enough to do the job.
But God had an important reminder for Moses:
“Then the LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied,” Exodus 4:2 NIV.
“But take this staff in your hand so you can perform the signs with it,” Exodus 4:17 NIV.
God essentially told Moses to take what was already in his hand and get on with it.
If the Lord has called you to do something, you currently have in your hand exactly what you need to get started. Once you put what you already have in your hand to work, more will follow.
