YOU have to Practice!!
If you want to fulfill your calling in life and use the talents God has placed within you, one thing is ABSOLUTELY essential. YOU HAVE TO PRACTICE!
Here is what we know about David the shepherd boy before he became a national hero when he shot that single smooth stone right through the ‘goalposts’ and defeated Goliath the smug and huge opponent, with a precise, well practiced aim, driving it right between his eyes and knocking him out cold!
Despite the many children’s books on this topic, David was not a young boy when he met Goliath and was likely in his late teens. As the youngest of 8 brothers; David spent a great amount of time shepherding his father’s flocks (1 Samuel 16:11, 17:15).
While he was out there working with the sheep, he developed a heart to care for others, great skill in the use of weapons, and his musical talent.
David most likely spent anywhere from five to ten years in this assignment.
It was during this time period, when God took this boy/ young man and developed him into the leader who would have the boldness and trust in God to face Goliath.
For many years without any fanfare, David practiced shooting rocks with his sling, learned patience tending sheep, and learned to seek God in the many lonely hours away from home. Add in the most important character ingredient to the life of David which magnified his talents. That thing which is called integrity.
No one saw David’s training when he was unknown and insignificant! But God watched, and had a plan. David took his talents and skills and offered the Glory to God willingly.
When the day came that God placed him in what to others appeared to be an impossible situation, David knew that although he was strong and had practiced over and over again with his sling and rocks, that it was not simply by human power or might that he would bring down the terror of Israel (Goliath). He knew that those two attributes had to be combined with the leading strength of the Spirit of God coursing through his being!
Never underestimate the humble, well rehearsed and integral underdog. The taunting of the Goliaths may seem intimidating and frightening, but hear this!
When God is with you…
… Who can stand against you?
“You will not succeed by your own strength or by your own power. The power will come from my Spirit” says the Lord of heaven’s armies,” Zechariah 4:6.
