We have recently experienced the devastating blow of hurricanes which have swept up through the southern portion of the U.S.A. and have left their havoc upon the people there, as well as the Caribbean Islands.

And yet the analogy of wind and its forces have come to be understood and interpreted from different viewpoints.

We see as the forces of wind in nature have come in their destructive fury, as people are left homeless, desperately seeking shelter from the storm, while streets are flooded, buildings collapse and are destroyed, and power to millions, goes out.

But the force of wind is also documented differently at times, especially from the various accounts from scripture. We know when many had gathered in the upper room, and the Holy Spirit came upon them, in the form of a wind and fire:

“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance,” Acts 2:2-4.

The force of wind although rushing and violent in occurrence, was not destructive. It came as a powerful force, but it was one of equipping as it distributed the Spirit of God upon the people there.

We also have the account of Nicodemus when he approached Jesus about how one would receive the new birth.

He knew that this teacher from God had obtained truth but he was in a quandary about how to receive the precious gift of the Holy Spirit, so that he might obtain the new birth that Jesus was offering.

“Jesus answered, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ The wind blows wherever it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit,” Acts 2:5-8.

Even the prophet Elijah came to understand the significance of the wind as he had fled away from Jezebel and his dealings with the prophets of Baal. He found out that the voice of the Lord wasn’t to be found in the fury and power from nature.

“So He said, “Go forth and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing,” 1 Kings 19:11-12.

God can use any means to get our attention, in the form of wind and other occurrences, whether they come from nature, supernatural events, or people.

Even the destructive force of a hurricane, an earthquake, or fire, while it is ominous and threatens the life of people, can be used to get people’s attention.

God is a God of mercy and yet His judgment while severe, actually comes out of His great love for us, because He needs to get our attention so that we may return to Him, and see His sovereignty over everything.
