Why It’s Important to Remember Your First Love
Feel like you’ve fallen out of touch with God and His purposes for you?
As we go throughout our lives, we get busy. We have family members who have needs, a job to work, homes to tend to, etc.
Sometimes we get so busy that time passes us by. Then, before we know it, we wake up one morning and wonder, “How did I end up here?”
Even when we get busy and begin feeling distracted, God has simple reminders for us to get back on track.
God always leads with the good
In the book of Revelation, God writes letters to several churches in order to give them instructions to get back on track. For the people of Ephesus, He had many praises!
“You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary,” Revelation 2:3 NIV.
Isn’t it wonderful that God led his instructions with the good things the people in this church were doing?
These people were working hard and had gone through many hardships — just like many of us!
God knows exactly what we’re going through and wants to encourage us. The LORD is such a good Father who knows how to interact with His children, and He does so in a way that brings joy and peace, not harsh judgement.
God’s priority is our relationship with Him
God did share one complaint with the people of Ephesus:
“But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first!” Revelation 2: 4 NLT
Wow. Even though the people of Ephesus were doing a lot of good things, they had forgotten the most important part — to love God and others as we love ourselves.
“Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these,” Mark 12:30-31 NIV.
It’s never too late to encounter God again
The people of Ephesus had forgotten their first love. They had forgotten the God who promises to be a refuge for us in times of trouble.
“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms,” Deuteronomy 33:27 NIV.
God is always waiting for you with open arms. He wants to encounter you — and for you to encounter Him — in a way that is real and tangible.
“Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always,” 1 Chronicles 16:11 NIV.
Fall in love with God all over again
The good news is, this instruction from the LORD to get back on track is easy! All we have to do is take a deep breath, slow down a bit and remember our first love — our amazing God and those around us.
Ask God to lead you into a fresh encounter with Him today. Watch as He blows your mind with His love and presence!
Blessings,
