Why Did the Holy Spirit Come?
John 16:7-14 | |
KJV Authorised Version | Syriac Peshitta |
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgement: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgement, because the prince of this world is judged. 12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. | 7 I tell you the truth: it is beneficial for you that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Redeemer of the accursed (literally meaning comforter or advocate) will not come to you, but if I depart I shall send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will correct the world concerning sin and concerning righteousness and concerning judgment; 9 Concerning sin, because they do not trust me; 10 Concerning righteousness, because I will go to my Father’s presence and you will not see me again; 11 Concerning judgment, because The Prince of this world is judged. 12 I have much to say to you, but you are not able to grasp it now. 13 But whenever The Spirit of The Truth comes, he will lead you into the whole truth, for he will not speak of his own will, but he shall speak whatever he shall hear and he shall reveal the future to you. 14 And he shall glorify me, because he shall take that which is mine and shall show you. |
It can be seen from John 16:7-14 that the purpose The Holy Spirit was sent for, was to proclaim Jesus and the Gospel Jesus caused to happen, by His death.
In evangelism, a person needs to see themselves as Jesus sees them:
They have rebelled against Him by not believing in who He is and His requirements of them,
That they are not in a righteous (correct) relationship with The Father and Jesus, and
They will face the same Judgement as Satan they were representing when they sinned against Jesus.
What we do in evangelism will bring Glory to Jesus by showing He is worth following because He is God.
The Holy Spirit does not do the speaking- we do!
We are the mouthpiece of God on earth
This is why we are told:
“Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you,” Titus 2:8.
Not to bring God into disrepute as His representative by what we say and also:
“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned,” Matthew 12:36-37.
What we say can condemn us before God!
If we are His representatives and mouthpiece on earth then not to speak as He tells us too is rebellion if done knowingly (sin) and a denial of Him.
What we say should bring Glory to God in some way, and if it does not, then it is not of Him.
This means no judgmental or critical attitudes, lies, complaining about anything, mocking speeches or gossip should proceed from our mouths, as these do not bring Glory to God or serve His purposes of evangelism.
It can be seen that the purpose of The Holy Spirit is to convict people of their need of Jesus, in order to escape the judgement on those who do not follow Jesus.
The Holy Spirit was sent to help people be restored to a relationship, as a Citizen of The Kingdom of God, with Jesus as their Lord and with The Father as His adopted children and part of the family of God.
He was also to teach them all they needed to know to enter and maintain their side of the relationships they entered into, once they followed Jesus as Lord.
Why The Holy Spirit was sent to earth, should control our purposes in Life.
In other words, we should always be ready to proclaim Jesus and what He has done and help people follow Him.
This is so serious, that if we do not do this when we have a chance, then we risk Jesus not claiming us as His when we die, so that we go to hell.
