When Treachery, Lies and Deception Cause Elevation
When treachery, lies and deception cause God to elevate His leaders into a Greater destiny.
David, by God’s direction, goes up to Hebron, and is made king over Judah, (2 Samuel 2:1-7).
Treachery is betrayal of trust; a deceptive action or nature.
Treachery is a spirit of unfaithfulness, infidelity, bad faith, breach of trust, duplicity, deceit, deceitfulness, deception, false-heartedness, falseness, stab in the back, backstabbing, double-dealing, untrustworthiness; nothing but lies on top of lies!
David knew his destination, but he knew also that the providence (the protective care of God) of God would pave the way.
Therefore he would take no step in such a crisis of his own and the nation’s history, without asking and obtaining the divine direction from God.
He was told to go into Judah, and fix his headquarters in Hebron, whither he accordingly repaired with his now considerable force. A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men, (Proverbs 18:16)
After the death of King Saul, Abner (the commander of Saul’s army) took Saul’s son Ish-Bosheth and made him king over the areas of Israel called Gilead, Ashuri and Jezreel, Ephraim, and Manasseh (2 Samuel 2:9). Ish-Bosheth was 40 years old at the time and reigned for two years (2 Samuel 2:10).
During this same time, David served as king over the tribe of Judah in Hebron, a city in southern Israel.
David’s men and Abner’s men fought one another in battle. After about two years, King Ish-Bosheth accused Abner of sleeping with Saul’s concubine (2 Samuel 3:7). Abner became angry at the false accusation and promised to turn over all of Israel to David (2 Samuel 3:8–10).
Not only that Joab had a spirit of hidden un-forgiveness harboring in his heart against Abner.
According to Joab, Abner was only seeking ways to defeat David. Without David’s permission, Joab tracked down Abner and murdered him (2 Samuel 3:26–27).
This deed was more than an act of supposed loyalty to David, however but a heart filled with malice, murder and hatred. You see, Joab had been seeking to avenge his brother Asahel’s death at the hands of Abner (2 Samuel 2:19–23).
The reason Abner killed Asahel Joab’s brother was, because he begged Asahel to stop pursuing him, but when Asahel refused to desist, Abner thrust the blunt end of a spear through Asahel’s stomach, and Asahel died on the spot (cf. 2 Samuel 2:23).
Although Joab won the battle, Abner escaped with his life; Asahel was buried in his father’s tomb at Bethlehem.
What is God saying to His People?
Ambition, unforgiveness, lies and treachery are ALL thinks that are traps waiting to swallow up the ones who hold on to them!
God knew each and every one of these people hearts and motives and, He used their poor choices to raise up His own King which was David!
Abner was a great warrior but he let his guard down to the wrong people! In addition to that, he failed to acknowledge God!
He was so hell-bent on trying to honor King Saul, he failed to understand that without God we can do nothing!
He thought he could promote and elevate a king on his own! So he took Saul’s son and tried to raise him up, not knowing God had another plan altogether!
He tried to raise up the house of Saul after about two years, King Ish-Bosheth accused Abner of sleeping with Saul’s concubine (2 Samuel 3:7).
The same man he tried to promote turned on him! So, Abner became so angry at the false accusation and promised to turn over all of Israel to David (2 Samuel 3:8–10) — which is what God intended anyway!
The Bible says that Abner met with David and made an agreement to bring the entire nation of Israel under David’s control.
But, afterwards, Joab, the commander of David’s army, came before David and accused Abner of falsehood.
According to Joab, Abner was only seeking ways to defeat David. Without David’s permission, Joab tracked down Abner and murdered him (2 Samuel 3:26–27).
David made all of his people mourn and declared that he had nothing to do with Abner’s death. Because, the man that killed him was one of his men.
Earlier we saw the excuse Joab made that Abner had been acting on his own, however, when Ish-Bosheth heard that Abner had died, he and all Israel were troubled.
Two men named Rekab and Baanah came to Ish-Bosheth’s home “at about the heat of the day.” King Ish-Bosheth “was lying on his bed at noon and they came there, all the way into the house, as though to get wheat, and they stabbed him in the stomach” (2 Samuel 4:5–6).
The assassins then cut off Ish-Bosheth’s head and slipped away (2 Samuel 4:7). When you begin to examine the lives of these individuals it was almost as though God allowed the evil deeds of these men to play out as the seeds they each had down would in the end be the death of them! Reaping what they had each sown!
Rekab and Baanah brought the head of Ish-Bosheth (Saul’s Son) to David, hoping for a reward. Instead, David had them executed, because they had “killed an innocent man in his own house and on his own bed” (2 Samuel 4:11).
This deed was more than an act of supposed loyalty to David, however. Joab had been seeking to avenge his brother Asahel’s death at the hands of Abner (2 Samuel 2:19–23).
No good will become of those seeking the high seat and platforms in this season people! Only God can anoint those he has called as His Kings and queens in this season!
For, I hear God saying, “Promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another. For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them,” (Psalm 75:6-8).
Many of us are so busy trying to promote folks God has not called using your every resource to stop the ones God has chosen you will eventually find yourself in hot water like Abner! After all he did to try to remain loyal to the house of Saul David still ended up being King!
No one and I mean no one can stop your destiny! No matter how hard they try! Because what God has ordained for you is for you! It might be delayed but never denied!
Promotion is coming to some and demotion to the wicked!
