What’s So Important About Pentecost?
Pentecost Sunday, isn’t just about celebrating the past or, “reminiscing over nostalgic details about the church’s supposed glory days.”
No! Pentecost is an invitation to dream! To anticipate a shift in the way God is bringing a fresh breath and movement of His presence! When a community of believers quits dreaming dreams, it has very little to offer either its brothers and sisters or the hungry world.
After Pentecost the apostles started moving out in their ministries. They were now “sent out” in the power of the Holy Spirit, demonstrating His power operating in their lives for all to see. With this power they started ministering to the needs of many people! This season of Pentecost should generate new power to speak into the lives of other people in a new bold and brave level.
In this season of Pentecost the Father is positioning us where we will be most effective, and is empowering us to be able to minister to people in a deeper and more profound way. This season that we are now in is the preparation for this new empowerment. The Father is working in our spirit man maturing us, and working on our flesh (sin habits).
As a result, it is so important to listen and obey His promptings. He is honoring our desire to help more of His children in a more genuine way and He is using this time to prepare us.
Every year, Pentecost Sunday comes 50 days after Easter Sunday, that’s how it gets its name. The Greek word for 50 is pentecost, [ πεντηκοστή pentēkostē pen-tay-kos-tay’ ]. The beginning of Pentecost is recorded in Acts 2:2-4.
“The FOLLOWERS OF JESUS were ALL TOGETHER IN ONE PLACE fifty days after the special religious gathering to remember how the Jews left Egypt.
All at once there was a sound from heaven like a powerful wind. IT FILLED THE HOUSE where they were sitting.
THEN THEY SAW tongues which were divided that looked like fire. These came down on EACH ONE OF THEM.
THEY WERE ALL FILLED with the Holy Spirit. Then they began to speak in other languages which the Holy Spirit made them able to speak.”
