What Would Make Your Life Better?
Here is a question for you… “What would make your life better?”
What’s the first thing that comes to mind? Is it less of something? (stress, work, confusion, worry, sickness).
Or, more of something? (money, time, vacation, sleep).
Your answer is determined by many different things.
And yet, how we answer that question reveals our heart. Our answers reveal what we long for and what we think will bring us a better level of contentment or happiness.
I am thinking about “better” because in my reading this morning I noticed the word “better” in many of the verses I saw!
“Better is a little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and turmoil with it. Better is a dish of vegetables where love is than a fattened ox served with hatred.” Proverbs 15:16-17.
It’s pretty Interesting that Proverbs connects “better” with “fear of the LORD“ and “love.”
It’s also interesting that Proverbs speak over 20 times about things that are “better”!
Proverbs is a book of wisdom. Proverbs tells us how to live life skillfully, and living life skillfully has much to do with knowing where to really find the “better”…. because all of us are in a search for “better.”
If we are looking for “better” in self focused pursuits, we never find “better” but only disappointment.
It is “better” to live with a roof over your head and with money in the bank and with food on the table, but it is “better” yet to live with the fear of the LORD in your heart.
You don’t need to feel sorry for having more than someone else, but a person is a fool if they think that they somehow deserve what they have or that they are somehow “better” than someone who has less than they do.
What do we have that we did not first receive?
It is all a gift from God!
That includes every meal, every drink of clean water, every bit of electricity that powers our computers, every book we read, every shirt we wear, and every bowl of soup put before us.
LORD! We humbly and reverently thank you for every breath we take this day!
You are our Absolute Source of Provision!
