What does it mean: “Fallen from Grace”?
What is Paul talking about in Galatians 5:4 when he talks about being fallen from Grace?
“You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace” Galatians 5:4.
Throughout the book of Galatians, Paul is dealing with a heresy that had taken the churches of Galatia into a belief and practice of a false religious practice. In Chapter one, he says he is saddened that they had left eh true Gospel for “ANOTHER GOSPEL” and goes on to explain that there is NOT ANY OTHER GOSPEL MESSAGE other than the one God had given him in the desert.
Galatians 1:6-7
“6 I am surprised and astonished that you are so quickly turning renegade and deserting Him Who invited and called you by the grace (unmerited favor) of Christ (the Messiah) [and that you are transferring your allegiance] to a different [even an opposition] gospel.
7 Not that there is [or could be] any other [genuine Gospel], but there are [obviously] some who are troubling and disturbing and bewildering you [with a different kind of teaching which they offer as a gospel] and want to pervert and distort the Gospel of Christ (the Messiah) [into something which it absolutely is not].”
To leave Grace would mean that one must CHANGE THE GOSPEL MESSAGE; the concept of Salvation by Grace Alone. To do this would mean that the Gospel Message has been perverted by adding to the requirements of the Gospel.
In Chapter three, Paul asked the Galatians:
Galatians 3:3
“Are ye so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?”
They trusted in the Lord by faith in Christ and received the spiritual new birth. Now they are trying to complete their salvation by works like circumcision or keeping the Law and Sabbath Days (Law of Moses). There were Jews that were teaching that such works were necessary for salvation in the early church. They were called Judiaziers. Consider these verses from the time of the council help in Jerusalem to consider this issue as right or wrong:
Acts 15:1
“And certain men which came down from Judea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.”
Acts 15:5
“Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the Law; ye are fallen from Grace.”
Some of these false teachers had come to Galatia and had gained many converts. This is what Paul is dealing with in the book of Galatia. Now, let us look at the verse in question again:
Galatians 5:4
“Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the Law; ye are fallen from Grace.”
Paul is saying that, If anyone is trying to be justified (saved) by obeying the Law, they have fallen from the concept of salvation by the Grace of God. No one can be saved by Christ and by the Law at the same time. To add anything like this to the Gospel will always make it become ANOTHER GOSPEL.
Christ is than become of no effect (said Paul to these false teachers) who trust in Christ and the deeds of the Law. THE MIXING OF GRACE WITH THE LAW DID RENDER IT INEFFECTIVE (according to the Apostle Paul who was writing Scripture to be placed in the Holy Bible). It is than a SERIOUS CHARGE INDEED that many are FALLING FROM THE GRACE GOSPEL and turning to “ANOTHER GOSPEL”.
What are some ways that this “GRACE GOSPEL” is being MIXED with Works TODAY? Even many today persist to do so when they say that Works must be maintained and the Law followed in order to continue to be saved.
- Circumcision
- Keeping the Ten Commandments in order to remain saved.
- Keeping the Sabbath Day in order to remain saved.
- Water Baptism in order to be saved.
- Confirmation in order to be saved.
- Church Membership in order to be saved.
- Keeping the Sacraments (the Lord’s Supper) in order to remain saved.
- Tithing in order to be saved.
- Keeping your first love in order to be saved.
***(ie _ ANY WORKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS…) in order to be saved… you fill in the blanks….
______________________________________
IN OTHER WORDS: ADDING ANY KIND OF WORKS TO THE WORK OF JESUS CHRIST (His work of salvation by giving himself to die for the sin of the world and his resurrection over that sin from His Grave) WOULD NOT BE FULLY TRUSTING IN HIM FOR SALVATION. If the Work that Jesus did saved men and brought them to ACCEPTANCE WITH GOD and even has counted them Righteous (as Paul wrote in Romans 4) than TO ADD MORE WORKS WOULD BE ADDING TO THEM and the Gospel (which is the Good News of God to lost sinners telling them that they can be fully saved by grace) WOULD BECOME NOT FULLY TRUSTING IN CHRIST FOR THEIR SALVATION. It also means men are FALLEN FROM GRACE or… they have STOPPED BELIEVING GRACE ALONE IN CHRIST SAVES MEN. This would be a FALSE TEACHING. (according to the Apostle Paul and the Scriptures).
CONCLUSION:
To fall from the concept of Grace means that someone leaves the concept of Salvation by Grace Alone.
This conclusion, which is false teaching, KEEPS PEOPLE FROM GETTING SAVED because they miss the MEANS OF SALVATION thinking Works are necessary. This would THROW THEM BACK UNDER THE LAW and in doing this they WILL WALK IN CONTINUAL CONDEMNATION because the Law cannot save me, but only BRING MEN TO CONVICTION AND CONDEMNATION which would hopefully DRAW THEM TO CHRIST WHO ALONE HAS SAVED THEM ON HIS CROSS AND RESURRECTION.
Those who supposedly trusted in Christ originally, but added the works of the Law, are either NOT SAVED IN THE FIRST PLACE (because they trust works not Jesus) or… THEY WILL BE CORRECTED BY GOD HIMSELF UNTIL THEY GET IT RIGHT IN THEIR UNDERSTANDING. I think God personally that in many instances, God does see the fact that men are IGNORANT and do not fully understand. He takes this misunderstanding and will PATIENTLY EXPLAIN TO THEM UNTIL THEY FIND THEIR ASSURANCE OF ETERNAL SALVATION. With the finding of this Eternal Assurance men are GREATLY HELPED TO JOY IN THE HOLY GHOST.
To FALL FROM GRACE is than to LEAVE THE CONCEPT OF SALVATION BY GRACE ALONE and it is NOT referring to the Loss of Salvation itself (IF that Person has truly been saved in the first place by Grace). The fact that Others who follow the WORKS DOCTRINE TO SALVATION….. “CANNOT BE SAVED” if… THEY BELIEVE THAT WORKS WILL SAVE THEM.
It is most harmful than to ALLOW THIS FALSE SALVATION WAY … TO CONTINUE TO BE SPOKEN WITHOUT SAYING SOMETHING IN DEFENSE OF THE TRUE SALVATION.
***(((If many can be ETERNALLY LOST by believing and following A FALSE GOSPEL MESSAGE… than WE WHO KNOW THE TRUTH MUST SPEAK or be held responsible, HAVING KNOWN THE TRUTH AND SAYING NOTHING.)))***
Personally I know that GOD WILL CHASTEN MEN WHO BELIEVE WRONG DOCTRINE to bring them into ALIGNMENT WITH HIS TRUTH. He will do it because HE LOVES THEM AND ALL MEN NOT WILLING THAT ANY PERISH BUT THAT ALL COME TO ETERNAL SALVATION.
