Untie the Donkey and Its Colt!
“Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, tell him that The LORD needs them, and he will send them right away.” Matthew 21:2-3.
What a freedom in this statement — especially that it came from a person of Authority whose words weren’t thought about twice, but completely followed by those around him, because of the explicit signs, wonders and miracles that were widely displayed for all of them to see which had attracted multitudes and curious followers around Jesus.
For the first time I heard this Word into my ears with a very different narrative and insight into my spirit, which is what I wanted to pen down.
- “Untie” means “Let Loose” — a statement of freedom.
- Donkey/ Colt is a sign — a beast of burden.
What a great contrasting situation and unfolding of words.
It was the greatest Message of Freedom!
While the city was preparing to shout a message of triumph — “Hosanna in the Highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of The LORD!” — God had a colt prepared.
There are times God prepares us — some other times, He prepares the resources — and other times the places.
The Calling of a Donkey with its Colt
Luke 19:31 : “If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The LORD needs it.’”
The number one user criteria Jesus adopted was the nature of the colt.
Luke 19:31 : “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.”
Strong’s dictionary : colt, foal, young donkey : from uwr in the sense of raising (i.e. Bearing a burden); properly, a young ass (as just broken to a load); hence an ass-colt — (ass) colt, foal, young ass.
The use of a young donkey, or “ayir,” in biblical narratives often symbolises humility and peace .
The donkey’s role in biblical times extended beyond mere utility; it also held symbolic significance in prophetic and royal contexts.
A colt is normally said to mean — the little one of a donkey or a horse (in this case the donkey’s colt )less than four years old.
Jesus’ authentic calling for the colt “I need it” — went forth before any other burden could have been placed on it.
A naive colt in its native land longing for a Glorious ride of the King! A bearer of the King and the Kingdom! A glorious exaltation of the colt.
\This was planned and prepared!
Jesus had a rationale and purpose to call out this prepared colt!
It was a matter of Time.
Being a “ colt” was an important stage of development of the donkey. God’s time of calling was great and significant.
It could live all its life in the Joy of having accomplished its purpose and relish its journey of fulfillment with Jesus.
A Grand Parade
When Jesus signaled that a donkey and its colt had to be untied and had offered directions to fetch them, He already knew which specific donkey with its colt in the city, had to be freed from its burden — to be!
He wanted to place the right burden and easy yoke of The Saviour riding on it, at which the people of Jerusalem would shout a Victory Message, with joyous outbursts waving palm leaves and spreading their cloaks over them.
The donkey and its colt was akin to every exaltation that Jesus was given, as they walked together on the streets of Jerusalem.
This colt that Jesus rode on, could have never imagined its freedom would appear even before it could begin to bear a burden, which as an animal it was bound to bear!
It could have little known that the people would throw their cloaks over it, and its feet would touch the grand tapestry of the fine cloaks of the peoples of Jerusalem.
As people worshipped Jesus, it would have been a great moment for the colt to be an instrument of Praise.
The beast of burden — could easily boast about bearing the blessing who turn would carry our burdens.
It became an unaffordable vehicle, because of the Kingly Price that it was called at, and was carrying to the whole world, signalling “Hosanna — Blessed be the one who comes in the name of The LORD Jesus.”
“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” John 8:36.
Riding on a donkey with its colt, was a great sign from Jesus — to help us start low.
Was Jesus settling for low? No! He was allowing the donkey to settle for more!
Jesus is coming again!
May His acclamation — “Untie them!” — signal a Message of Freedom to all who have been waiting for a call!
“Untie them and bring them to me” is a sentence of significance to the beasts, that were destined to be loaded with burden.
A Message of great Deliverance was on wide display as they together rode the streets of Jerusalem.
There was Joy in the air along with shouts of “Hosanna in the Highest!“ echoing the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9 and Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My Yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I AM gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My Yoke is easy and My Burden is light.”
