Turn back to the Love you once had
When a man and a woman fall in love, they don’t really care about material things; they just care about each other. Their whole world is filled with one another. They can literally find something about that person in everything around them. Not a single day goes by without something or someone reminding them that they are… simply… in… love.
But if that couple falls out of love or chooses to divorce, suddenly “things” matter; the house, the furniture, the car, the bank accounts, who gets the dog, who owns what? The same thing applies with the church today.
The first century believers didn’t have much, yet they possessed all things, because they were in love with God. Material things didn’t matter because they had so much more. But as church history went on, everything changed. As the church began to get wealth, power, and status, suddenly their love for Christ began to dim. The truth is, most churches today focused mainly on the material things, instead of focusing on the importance of being in love with Christ, and loving one another. Therefore we have fallen out of love; we have lost our first love.
Jesus accused the Church of Ephesus of doing this very thing. He said to them, “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent,” Revelation 2:4-5.
When you are in love, you don’t care much about material things, but once these things become important, it’s a sign that you are no longer in love. Remember when you first came to the Lord? You didn’t care about things; you had Him, and that was enough.
Maybe some of you realize that as time has gone by, you’ve become wrapped up in the things of this life. I want you to know that once your heart becomes focused on the things of this life, you fall out of love with God.
So put away your things; clear out that space in your heart so that He can fill it once again. Turn away from the things that have taken your attention from God, and get back to the love you once had for Him; because those who are in love are free from the things of this world.
