The Word and The Spirit
“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart,” Hebrews 4:12.
“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life,” John 4:13-14.
One can get caught-up in the things of God so much that they get unbalanced in either following after the spirit, or the word. We need both so that we are nourished and become mature in the Lord.
To seek the spirit of the Lord is a good thing, and we are told to seek after spiritual gifts, but this alone, is not enough. Seeking his face and being able to hear his voice, is an excellent thing. But without the word of God, his written word, we are not strengthened for the journey ahead. We may know what the journey is, because of the anointing that he has placed in us through the Holy Spirit, but while we walk ahead in it, our bones are not given marrow and strength.
An analogy that the Lord gave to me years ago was of a tent. The wind blows through the fabric of it, and this is like the Holy Spirit. But it needs stakes to be tied down so that the winds of this world don’t blow it away. The written word then becomes the stakes that tie it down.
We need to be like a pillar in the house of God. The Holy Spirit can then blow around and between the framework of that house, but our foundation, our security, then is founded upon the rock of Christ and his word.
One can also just read the word of God and be fed and strengthened by it, but their life can become dry and without the freshness and anointing that comes from the indwelling of the Holy Spirit within them.
We walk as people who have two legs, and we need both of them in order to go forward. We have two spheres of our brains that enable us to be both creative and logical. Our minds work in his manner as well as the framework of our body, in order to be balanced people. In the same manner, to be balanced spiritually, we need both the work of the Holy Spirit and the logos written word.
~ Stephen Hanson
Stephen Hanson of In His Truth Ministries came to the Lord is a special way in 1975 and has been prophesying regularly since. In these end-time birthing pangs we are to be reminded that judgment must first begin with the household of God. Will we be prepared and ready?
