The Treasures of Darkness
“I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, The LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name.” (Isaiah 45:3) A verse weighted down with glory!
From day one, God has invaded the dark. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters (Genesis 1:1-2).
Light wasn’t creation’s canvas — darkness was. And The LORD was there, already at work before light was a thing.
Lack of light doesn’t mean a lack of The LORD’s presence, there is actually a good chance He is waiting for us in the shadows.
Just as the people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was (Exodus 20:21).
We all face times we can’t see well enough to maneuver on our own. How comforting it is to know that the One who fights for us is drawing us to Him, expanding our faith in the middle of the night.
Just listen to David’s song of awe: clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne (Psalm 97:2).
God has a way of illuminating things, but even if He is content to sit with us in the dark for a while, that is okay too.
We who dwelled in darkness have seen a great light, remember how Jesus prayed in the dark repeatedly, how the crucifixion was set to a darkened backdrop, how the darkness has not overcome the light — over and over, You have that friend unlike any other in the shadow places.
Know that the fear you have been feeling has lost its grip.
If you are in a season of darkness (confusion, waiting, conflict), take heart. You are not in this darkness alone.
He will share with you the hoards of secret places, showing off His power and pursuit of you, drawing you in.
Just as the small seed finds itself enveloped in darkness, the Father’s tender hand is there helping it to reach the warm rays of light and to arise.
That is his hand you feel upon you as you are that seed planted in holy ground for such a time as this.
Just as Paul’s eyes were blinded on the roadside and he found himself in the dark, God was getting ready to change his life forever.
He gave him a treasure in that dark place. Just as within the womb is darkness until the day of delivery. It is soon to birth within your life.
Jesus our Saviour and Mighty King filled with wondrous light and sits with us, walks with us in the darkness.
Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,” even the night shall be light about me; Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, but the night shines as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to You.
He is in that room with you as you cry out in that midnight hour. He is with you in that tight cocoon where you are feeling like everything has you trapped when in reality you will soon emerge.
He is with you in the dark valley and you are just passing through. He is with you in that dimly lit sanctuary with hands raised in worship and your cries rising like incense.
Oh I feel to say it again and let it settle within your heart, let it illuminate the dark space where you are.
Lack of light doesn’t mean a lack of The LORD’s presence! He is there!
