The Superiority of Jesus Christ in the New Covenant
This is the final study we will do in Hebrews, and I believe The LORD Jesus wants to bring everything together for us….
The last verse I mentioned was Hebrews 8:6,
“and now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.”
What is a mediator? A mediator is a go-between. According to 1 Timothy 2:5-6, there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself a ransom for all.
For peace and salvation to come to you, Jesus Christ, with his own blood entered into The Holy of Holies once for all, and obtained eternal redemption for you.
He did for you what you could not do. He went in your place, and He was the only one who could, because a mediator must possess the attributes of both parties. It was the only way Jesus could secure a guarantee of the better covenant.
In Galatians 3:19 it says, Moses is also spoken of as a mediator. However, the contrast is that The Law was a covenant between God and the Jewish People requiring fulfillment of both parties.
As you have seen, The Old Covenant Law was insufficient, because the blood of bulls and goats could not take away sins, it only offered a limited atonement for a period of time, it only covered them, and The Law itself could not even be kept.
Romans 10:1-10 says:
“Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
For they being ignorant of God’s Righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto The Righteousness of God.
For Christ is the end of The Law for Righteousness, to every one that believeth. For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, that the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, say not in thine heart, who shall ascend into heaven? (That is, to bring Christ down from above.)
Or, who shall descend into the deep? (That is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth The LORD Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
Friends, we can’t make ourselves righteous by doing good woks, we can only be righteous when Jesus clothes us with his righteousness.
Under the New Covenant we have better promises, and with the promise to Abraham, God did it for you, He took full responsibility Himself and secured salvation and eternal life through Jesus Christ by His Grace, not by the works of The Law.
Ephesians 2:8,9 says,
“for by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.”
All glory to God for His glorious Plan from before the foundation of the world for you!
Take note that under The Old Covenant, God only spoke to judges, prophets, and kings. Because of this, God was not personal, He was distant to the rest of the people.
The high priest had to submit the sacrifices, and everything was ritualistic, an outward form, only a picture of the better to come.
Let’s read on in Hebrews 8:10-13
“For this is the Covenant that I will make with The House of Israel after those days, saith The LORD; I will put My laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall by to Me a people: and they shall not teach every man his neighbour; and every man his brother, saying, know The LORD: for all shall know Me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. In that he saith, a New Covenant , he hath make the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.”
Wow! Here is the best part of being under The New Covenant, look what else Jesus secured for you. It says in the scripture above that The LORD put his laws into our mind and wrote them in our hearts.
This work God did is different than under The Old Covenant, because it is an internal work, in your hearts.
The Law was external, on stone tablets, and failed because it could not make the worshiper perfect in conscience, their hearts were not cleansed and changed…. But you have been given The Mind of Christ.
Hebrews 9:13-14 says,
“For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: how much more shall The Blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
My friends, in Salvation you have the gift of The Holy Spirit that The Old Testament people didn’t have. You are a new creation through Christ, old things have passed away behold all things are new.
You are given a new life in Christ and the power to overcome through The Holy Spirit.
Ezekiel 36:26-27 says,
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My Statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.”
You have help and faith from The LORD himself to live according to His Word by His Spirit. Through The Spirit, The Father can let you know what He wants you to do without telling you, even upon our innermost thoughts and understanding.
He even gives you the desire to obey Him. The Law gave you no power to live righteously or victoriously, but The Spirit gives you the power to fulfill the righteousness The Law demands.
He is your teacher now. Romans 8:2-9 says, if we walk in The Spirit, we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh….
He that hath not The Spirit, is none of His. Now we can go directly into The Holy Place, that Throne of Grace through Jesus and receive Help, Mercy and Grace in time of need.
Now you have the power to obey willingly, and if you sin you have an advocate in Jesus Christ with The Father for Forgiveness….. A forgiveness that forgets our iniquities and remembers them no more.
Beloved, you can see that The Old Covenant truly is out of date and in no way compares to the glorious New Covenant we have because of Jesus’ Blood. God bless you all!
