The Identity Crisis
A faith once soaring so high upon the wings of eagles is now too bruised to take flight. What happened? A pain, a loss or setback? It has truly become more and more challenging today, for the believers in the body of Christ to maintain his or hers faith without wavering because much of the distorted perceptions we have about our presence, position and power are not God’s reality. Think about it. How do you really see yourself?
We need “faith” and the truth of God’s uncompromising word to achieve the will of God in our lives, not the opinions that we have of ourselves. Our lack in accomplishing those God-inspired dreams and businesses are delayed because we have entangled insecurities from having a secular identity.
Who Do You Say That You Are?
I struggled for many years with my own personal insecurities because the expectations I was trying to live up to were influenced by worldly views . “I’m not pretty or smart enough.” “I don’t wear the right clothes or drive the right car that says – I have arrived at success.” And for many years I have suffered defeat and heartbreak because of the disappointment of never measuring up to the standards of myself or someone else. I have even fallen as low as to not loving myself (self-hate), because my perception was that there was nothing about me to love.
Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! There is a lot about me to love! It was not until I passionately sought after God and began to meditate in His word that I learned my personal beliefs were spiritual strongholds binding me from the true identity that God created for me to be and prevented me from experiencing the best of God in my life.
The Bible talks about strongholds in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (KJV):
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
Spiritual strongholds are vain creative thoughts built upon error and deception. They are pretensions, arguments or incorrect mind-set patterns that are contrary to the knowledge and will of God. Strongholds persuade us with hopelessness to accept everyday life situations as unchangeable and hinder us from the life of abundant promises that the Father intends for us to live. They play a large role in our spiritual freedom and if left unrecognized or unconfessed, strongholds will ultimately lead to self-destruction. Many of us have not arrived in our divine identities because we have been wrestling with identities that others or the world expect us to be.
Seeing Yourself through the Father’s Eyes
The Father has given us all a divine identity and imprint. To be the person God has called and purpose for us to be begins with knowing yourself. And to know yourself means you have to know God. God is His Word. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17. The fullness of life, through Jesus Christ comes by knowing, understanding, believing and actively living according to what the Word of God (that is God) says we are. The Word is of no effect if we are molding the scriptures to compliment our realities or perceptions.
Romans 12:2, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
To tear-down our erroneous philosophies and belief systems, we have to daily transform our minds with the washing of God’s Word.
As we apply and cleanse our thoughts with the Word of God, our minds will begin to think as the Father thinks and see things in the way the Father does through His spiritual eyes. We will come to know the will of God and discern what is right, perfect and good. The light of God’s word will overcome any deception and error in our minds, if we discipline ourselves to pursue the identity of God.
