The Great Apostle John Saw Twenty-four Elders
“After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their head’s crowns of gold.” Revelation 4:1-4.
When The LORD caught up John the beloved Apostle into heaven to His very Throne, He revealed to him twenty-four Elders seated around The Throne.
No doubt The LORD revealed the future to John in this Vision, and even John saw that someday he would be seated with the elders — but as for the moment he still had to die and go on the be seated with them.
There are in fact Twelve (12) Tribes of Israel, and there are Twelve (12) Apostles of The Lamb.
This added together represent the finished Governmental Work of God, which started with the Old Testament Covenant and continued to the heads of the New Testament Covenant.
The Vision was revealed in this way to the Apostle John, so he would know that the things written in the Revelation would be — as the actual Scriptures say in Verse 1
“Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.”
The LORD was wanting John to understand that after all, the total twenty-four (24) Elders both of the Old Covenant and the New Covenant, would follow the things that were “to come after that!”
It would have been quite shocking and also very comforting and assuring to the Apostle John, that he would be present there in that day.
There are many today who do not fully understand that God’s plan of Eternal Salvation is fully real, and one can know for sure that when it is all over here on Earth — for believers — that they are saved.
Not by any works on their part, but by the Grace of the Almighty God through Jesus shed Blood.
Salvation is sure. The Apostle John saw himself in Heaven, before he was actually there! Shocking confirmation of Grace Salvation.
The Number Twelve (12) is important, for we understand it to be the number of Governmental perfection.
In other words, twelve is the “completion of the eternal purpose” of God.
Then we understand the importance of the doubling of that purpose by including the New Covenant Peoples into the completion number of twenty-four (24).
There definitely were, in Bible History, twelve tribes in Israel, and there are definitely also twelve Apostles of The Lamb.
Actually, one need only read again in Revelation 21:12-14 that there was coming down from Heaven someday a City prepared for His Church — The Bride of Christ — and that City would have Twelve Gates upon which will be written:
“The names of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, and also upon the Foundations of that City will be written the names of the Twelve Apostles.”
Jesus came to Earth at the end of the Old Covenant, and Jesus died for the sins of both the Old Covenant People as well as the New Covenant People.
Both were the object of his eternal work. The Old Testament People were never fully redeemed from Sin until Jesus died for them and shed His Blood for them.
Then the New Covenant People were completely saved and fully redeemed by the same Blood that Jesus shed on his cross.
( The New Covenant People look back to that eternal salvation work even as now the Old Covenant People looked forward to the shedding of Jesus Blood as a Lamb of God taking away all sin. )
In order to understand Eternal Salvation — the Eternal Plan of God for the redemption of men — it is clear that God has brought the two Covenant Peoples under one banner, His Banner of Love over Both.
There is nothing shallow or partial about the finished plans of God in the Salvation of all men who will believe, both of the Old and the New Testament.
The Greatest work that has ever been done is “God’s Atoning work of the forgiveness of sin by His own Blood.”
The Book of Revelation then clearly will show us all to know about the “Things to come” after these Elders are seated in the heavens.
The Revelation Book then, is a Book of Great Value.
It is a book that has been misunderstood by many, because of the sheer depth of the Revelation.
To say that it is impossible to understand without the “Special Revelation of God” would be an understatement. One who reads it must glean The Truth, only by The Spirit of God, else the things will only cause confusion.
I was for many years a member of a well know denomination, and even went to Bible School to study, and I can say fully, that I never heard much at all about the Book of Revelation.
As a matter fact, I heard it was a book that should not have even been listed in Scripture, because NOBODY could understand it!
I never saw it listed in the study quarterly used in Sunday School. I was told that If I read it, I could not fully know its meaning for it was written in figures and types, etc. (hard to understand).
I want to make this discerned Revelation about the Twenty-four Elders now, that many do not understand.
The 12+12=24 simply states that there is only one Church.
There is only ONE — and that One is made up of Jewish and Gentile Believers from all ages.
There have never been two Churches, but there is only One Church.
That old Church, which begins many years ago in the Old Testament is the predicted same one in the New Testament, only the order has been changed to new and better things.
There are many who believe there two, but no, The Scriptures tell us there is only one!
That fact is clearly seen in this Text found in Revelation 4, and in the expiations found in Ephesians 2.
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: that in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; that at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: but now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; and that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: and came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; in whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in The LORD: in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.” Ephesians 2:4-22.
Further Scriptures for Understanding:
“I therefore, the prisoner of The LORD, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” Ephesians 4:1-6.
