The Flow of The Spirit
The flow of The Spirit is beyond our human minds.
Entering the flow of The Spirit is like flying by the seat of our pants without instruments. That’s how the first pilots flew. It seems risky to our natural minds but, it’s worth it.
Today, flight instruments show the pilot what is happening. The perception comes to their mind first, then they act.
That is the natural way we see, think and do. The flow The Spirit is perceived spiritually. What The Holy Spirit quickens to our spirit is intangible and easily overridden by our natural mind.
We speak in Tongues as The Holy Spirit gives us utterance.
When The Holy Spirit was poured out on the Day of Pentecost, all were filled with The Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues as The Spirit gave them utterance.
“And they were all filled with The Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as The Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:4 ESV.
“For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful” 1 Corinthians 14:14 NASB.
There, Paul explains that the Words don’t come to our mind and then we speak. The Words come to our spirit and we speak a language we do not understand.
Thus, our mind is out of the loop and does not override what The Spirit quickens to our spirit. Our mind is unproductive. We just provide our vocal cords and breath. We are not forced by The Holy Spirit. We can start or stop speaking at our own will.
“Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue is to pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive. What is the outcome then? I will pray with The Spirit, but I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with The Spirit, but I will sing with the mind also.” 1 Corinthians 14:13-15.
If you do not currently speak in tongues, just ask our Father in heaven to baptize you in The Spirit, in Jesus name, if He hasn’t already, He will. Then step out in faith take a breath and speak or sing in tongues.
Then you will receive spiritual power to flow in the gift of The Spirit.
Messiah Jesus told his apostles:
“But you will receive power when The Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (Acts 1:1-11)
Praying in tongues is primarily for our own edification.
When we pray in tongues, we are built up in our own faith and our own spiritual awareness.
Paul explains:
“Pursue love, and earnestly desire The Spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in The Spirit. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up,” 1 Corinthians 14:1-5 ESV.
Interpretation of tongues differs in that The Holy Spirit gives our spirit the gist of what is coming forth and we use our mind only to put it in our own language.
Tongues with interpretation is equivalent to prophesy as Paul explains in how to flow in The Spirit.
“Therefore let him who speaks in another language pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
What should I do? I will pray with The Spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with The Spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Otherwise, if you bless with The Spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the “Amen” at your giving of thanks, seeing he doesn’t know what you say? For you most certainly give thanks well, but the other person is not built up. I thank my God, I speak with other languages more than you all. However, in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in another language.” 1 Corinthians 14:13-19.
The Word of Prophecy comes to our spirit and mind.
Sometimes, we only get 1 or 2 Words or a Word of Knowledge and simply trust The Holy Spirit to give us the rest while we speak.
Sometimes we see pictures or symbols in our minds eye and trust The Holy Spirit to give us the meaning.
When we come together, we only speak what The Spirit is prompting if it goes with the overall flow of The Spirit in our gathering.
Writing a Word of Prophecy is more difficult, because we are not in the gathered flow of The Spirit and are not subject to correction from prophets gathered with us.
So, we have greater responsibility for accurately sharing what The Holy Spirit is revealing to us.
Messiah Jesus likened the gift of God to living water.
“A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Yeshua said to her, “Give me a drink.” For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. The Samaritan woman therefore said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Yeshua answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”” John 4:7-10.
Messiah Jesus was speaking of the living water to come at Pentecost.
On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant The Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time The Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.” Acts 7:37-39 ISV.
On the Day of Pentecost, Peter explained the wonderful blessings of the outpouring of The Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:1-42)
Scripture quoted above is from the World Messianic Bible unless otherwise note.
