Shadows of the Things to Come
Shadows of the Things to Come – Part 1 of 3
The Red Sea Event, Mount Sinai, Joshua’s parting of the Jordan and Conquering of Jericho Event, Noah Event, Ten Plagues of Egypt, Acts Pentecost, Sermon on the Mount, Transfiguration, and others are ‘shadows of the things to come’.
(As below, you can look up for more of them in this link to a BibleGateway blog.)
I have shared in my earlier posts about how the End Times is foreshadowed in the Red Sea Event with God leading Moses and His people.
The Holy Spirit has also led me to delve into Scripture in which many (not all) Biblical events are also part of the ‘shadow of the things to come”.
Many Old Testament events foreshadowed the Coming of Jesus as Savior – the Boy Who Was Born in A Manger, the Son of Man, Messiah, the Christ, the Lamb of God.
This is clear in Genesis 3:14-15, in which God clearly sealed the fate of the serpent — Satan — be crushed by the offspring of the woman — and that is Jesus, Jesus was an offspring/born of a woman — Mary.
There are many resources available on public domain on how the Old Testament points to the birth of Jesus and His role as Savior. Therefore, I am only going to discuss about how these events points out to the End Times and to the Return of Jesus.
That is the beauty of God’s authorship and penmanship. When He inspired the authors to write Scripture, the words are just full of layers and layers of hidden mysteries.
He made everything required for salvation very clear and relatively easy to understand. Some concepts may look contradicting at first, but the longer one follows Jesus, the more the Holy Spirit will reconcile in our hearts and minds these mysteries.
One example is the Godhead and the concept of Trinity. I can’t explain ,it because it is of the Spirit. I could only say that there is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. But unbelievers who are blind, will not understand the concept of three in one and will not be able to accept this truth.
In a similar manner, many prophecies concerning Jesus’ role as Messiah is ‘blurry’ at first glance, and if this is not true, look at the Jews who are waiting for their Messiah, how could they miss this?
They have been studying it for thousands of years from generation to generation.
Look at the Pharisees. I wanted to point out that studying Scripture is great.
But to have discernment and understanding of the Scripture is what one needs. The key to this is the Holy Spirit.
There are thousands of people who read the Old Testament and missed Jesus. And there are a lot of Christians who read the Bible and go to Church who miss out on their relationship with Him (not talking about the unsaved here, the saved who may miss living out their best for Jesus).
So if anyone boasts of understanding Scripture simply by just reading and studying intellectually, they are right, they know it well, probably thoroughly well, but mostly intellectually.
They would not understand by the Holy Spirit. I believe this is why Paul emphasizes the significance on relying on the Holy Spirit in his Epistles.
In almost every Epistle, he’d mention the Holy Spirit at least once, and this is because without the Spirit of Truth, the Word of God becomes ‘flat’ and dead words in people.
Back to the subject at hand, I mentioned some of these events include the Noah’s Flood Event, Abraham and Lot’s Sodom and Gomorrah, The Ten Plagues, The Mt. Sinai Events, The Joshua and Jericho Event, Sermon on the Mount, Transfiguration and Pentecost, and I will focus on how these events foreshadow the Return of Jesus, as some of these events are more obvious in the role of foreshadowing than others:
1) Noah’s Flood Event:
In Matthew 24:37, Jesus Himself said that when He, Himself returns at His Second Coming, many (the masses) would be oblivious to His Return, despite the warnings, just like how the people of Noah’s time were oblivious to the Flood despite Noah’s warnings to these people.
Just like Noah preached about the warnings of the Flood, and because at the time, nothing that came close to such an event had ever happened (worldwide flood), they would not believe him. In the same way, many of God’s prophets and watchmen and women will preach about the Second Coming but the masses will not believe. This in itself is part of the prophecy.
In the Noah’s Flood Event, God provided the world with an ark that He commanded Noah to build, but everyone but those in the family of God rejected the ark. In the same way, God provided the Ark — the Cross with Jesus on it — that He had commanded His Son to bear and Jesus did so willingly and lovingly — and only those in the family of God will be saved by the ark.
Just like only the sons of Noah were safe from the worldwide judgment, so the sons of God (of Romans 8:19 — written by Paul in Greek and not the sons of God in Genesis 5 written by Moses in Hebrew — they are not the same) will be safe from worldwide pestilence and judgment during the End Times.
Also, devastating floods will occur and take the lives of many in judgment.
There maybe more of these hidden mysteries coming to light that I will share later, but for now let’s move on to the Abraham and Lot and Sodom and Gomorrah.
2) Abraham and Lot and Sodom and Gomorrah Event
According to Genesis 19, the judgment upon Sodom and Gomorrah happened because of the vile and lewd sins that the people were committing in these towns (back then towns of 300 people were considered large cities).
I mentioned Abraham because in the Genesis 18 incident in which he implored the LORD to spare the city if there were ten righteous people in the city, is similar to the End Times.
This is also confirmed in Joel 2:28 (which according to Peter is fulfilled during his time in Acts 2:15), but will be fulfilled at a greater extent in the End Times, that God will inspire many with His Holy Spirit to prophesy, dream dreams and visions, and many of those He poured out His Spirit unto will intercede for the righteous people of God, for God to spare the lands and the cities from judgment for the sake of the ‘ten’.
In Genesis 19, we learn that the number among the righteous were less than ten so judgment was poured upon the cities.
And Lot was told to gather and his wife and daughters were taken out of the ‘scene of punishment’ and told to run. In this same way also Jesus will gather His people and take them out of the scene of punishment, when the sins of the wicked outweighs the worth of the righteous. When the limit is not met.
In the same way that Lot’s wife that looked back was turned into salt for loving Sodom and Gomorrah, many people will receive the same fate of the masses by loving the world too much.
Even the brimstone and sulfur in the form of judgment will be repeated according to Jesus in Luke 17:26-37, and Jude in Jude 1:7, as well as prophesied by John the Apostle in Revelation 9, and ultimately in the Lake of Fire and Brimstone in Revelation 20 and 21.
3) The Ten Plagues Event:
First of all, the ones who will have the same caliber and anointing as Moses in these events will ultimately be the Two Witnesses, maybe Moses will return and maybe not (I have decided to not pursue that matter). But the plagues will and have occurred in several ways.
There was a plague of blood (water turning red as blood several weeks ago in Indonesia and Malawi within 48 hours of the Blood Moon event – references below), plague of frogs (happened last year in North Carolina as a result of Hurricane Florence), plague of lice or gnats, plague of flies, plague of pestilence on livestock, plague of boils, plague of hail, plague of locusts (recently happened in Mecca and Egypt), plague of darkness, and death of firstborn.
While some of these are already making a comeback, others may not and let’s hope and pray that God have mercy on us all for those.
Just like these events happened during the days of Moses, some if not all of these plagues will happen and have happened today.
Just like Moses warned Egypt before they left for the Promise Land (Canaan), the Two Witnesses will warn the world through worldwide broadcasting and many of the Joel 2:28 company will warn the world of pending and upcoming judgment that is coming before they would eventually leave for The Millennial Kingdom.
