Have you experienced a case of spiritual identity theft?

Here are a few clues:

• You find yourself thinking often about your past mistakes.
• You feel like a victim instead of a victor.
• You struggle with forgiving others who have hurt you.

Did you answer “yes” to any of the above statements?

If so, don’t beat yourself up about it. Cases of spiritual identity theft have happened to some of the best of us — even Bible heroes.

The good news is, for every attack of the enemy there is a God remedy!

I’ll share a few examples with you:

Moses: the attack of the past

When God revealed to Moses his destiny to free the Hebrew slaves, he became afraid.

“Moses said to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I’m not a good speaker. I’ve never been a good speaker, and I’m not now, even though you’ve spoken to me. I speak slowly, and I become tongue-tied easily,”” Exodus 4:10 GW.

Here was this incredible destiny God had laid out for Moses, but he was still so focused on who he was in the past.

“The Lord asked him, “Who gave humans their mouths? Who makes humans unable to talk or hear? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? It is I, the Lord! Now go, and I will help you speak and will teach you what to say,” ” Exodus 4:11–12 GW.

The remedy for Moses’ fears was to see himself as God saw him!

When you feel like you’re coming under an attack from your past, refocus and remember it’s about who God says you are and who He is in you!

David: the attack of becoming a victim instead of a victor

God handpicked David to be the true King of all Israel. There was only one problem — Saul, the current King, wanted to kill David because of his true identity!

“Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David,” 1 Samuel 19:1 NIV.

David could have chosen to be a victim if he wanted to. After all, the King was trying to kill him! But he chose to believe God about his identity instead.

David sung this Psalm in a cave as he hid from Saul:

“My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music,” Psalm 57:7 NIV.

When you become tempted to feel like a victim, remember that God has made you a victor!

Joseph: the attack of unforgiveness

God gave Joseph dreams about his true identity to become a ruler, but Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery because of it.

After Joseph came into his position of power, Joseph chose to bless his brothers instead of cursing them.

And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you,” Genesis 45:5 NIV.

If you’re struggling with unforgiveness in your life, the remedy is to realize that God works all things for the good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

God restored these heroes’ true identities even when it felt like all hope was lost. He can do the same for you!
