One Needs to Prove It True!
I met a man on the airplane and…
I sat down by a man on a trip years ago, on an airplane. After we were well up into the air, I turned to him and begin to talk.
I asked him, what do you do in life? He answered I am a scientist.
“Wow..!” I said, “That is interesting. Talk to me about why you wanted to be a scientist.”
He went off talking about how it was very important to him to prove all things with fact. As he explained it, “It is not enough to hear of something, one needs to prove it true.”
He talked on and on.
Finally he stopped and ask me: “What do you do in life?”
I answered, “I am a preacher!”
“Oh my,” he declared, “how could I have ever gotten to this place and find myself sitting by a preacher… of all things.. And now even talking with him.”
It was plain to see he was embarrassed and disgusted to be sitting next to a preacher.
I ask him, “Why do you feel that way about preachers?”
Oh, that opened the door. He went off the wall talking all sorts of talk. I sat and listened with interest.
Directly I said to him, “Have you ever read the bible?”
“No,” he said, “I never have.”
Then he added, “I don’t believe in the Bible!”
“Well sir,” I answered, “how can you be a scientist and make that sort of statement about the Bible?
Moments before now, you said you had to prove all things!!!!!!!!
How are you going to prove that the Bible is not truth, if you never read it or investigate it?”
He sat and glared at me. For a long time he was silent. I plainly thought for sure, the conversation was finished.
As the plane was landing a hour or so later, the man turned to me with tears in his eyes.
He said to me… “I am so sorry. I am going to go read the Bible and see if it is real. I must prove it for myself!”
Then he confessed, “You know… I have said I was an atheist for years, and would not read the Bible.”
He broke down. Stammering, he said, “My father and mother were Christians. They tried to tell me, but I would not listen.
“Now, today, you have told me something I refused to hear from them… I was wrong. I need to read the Bible.”
The man’s final words to me — which I will never forget — were, “Thank you sir for telling me the truth. Now I intend to go prove it.”
A true testimony.
