Judgement begins from the House of God
Judgement begins from the House of God,
“For the time has come for the judgment to begin from the house of God. And if it first begins from us, what will be the end of those disobeying the gospel of God? 1 Peter 4:17.
Why should it start from the house of God?
Many would argue this case, and say the church is God’s agency on earth, she having a little leaven, is no match to the world which is flourishing in outright rebellion, and so that does not guarantee her judgment, at least in comparison to the unbelievers.
We see instances where God in the Old Testament overlooked the gravest rebellious acts, yet poured his wrath to the details of simple sin. It is apparent in the case of Eli’s Sons who brought women and fornicated at the door of the house that Peter says, begins the judgement.
Nothing happened to Eli’s sons, at least not instantly, as we would have imagined, given the nature of this sin.
Years earlier, Moses’ mockers, of whom we can say, only gave their opinions about him marrying foreign woman, were cornered by the hand of God and HE judged them harshly.
Much Later, we see Nadab and Abihu, coming with censers and burn incense. We later on realize this was profane and this attracted instant death.
The same door that Eli’s sons defiled and nothing happened, was the very door that Nadab and his friend approached, but in ”lesser” degree of sinning and they were killed.
I have found out in all these scenarios, it all depended on the magnitude of God’s glory present at that hour and on that place.
Eli sons operated at the dark moment, where the light had gone off, unlike Moses’ earlier ministry which was synonymous with cloud and fire of God’s presence. The common denominator, is of course, the blessings that abounds as the glory is amidst God’s people, that is, if this presence is treated with reverent fear and holiness, but then also, a penalty of sudden judgement, should anyone mess with the glory that has descended.
This principle repeats in Acts 5, as the death of Ananias and Saphira begins the underlying of this principle; where the glory of God is, HE will instill instant discipline.
This is the characteristic of the judgement pronounced to the House.
Shalom.
