Jesus Reigns!
Jesus Reigns!
“Jesus reigns” and “Jesus is Lord” are the words Christians usually lift up in banners at mass meetings for their respective nations: They have done so several times in Washington DC with hundreds of thousands of Christians from every state massing together for the Lord in front of the Capitol building. Similar meetings have been held in various countries, all usually emphasizing these same positions, that Jesus is Lord and that He reigns.
Indeed the two names in the book of Revelation signifying this at the end of time is that He, the Lamb of God, is also the Lion of Judah – Lord of lords and King of kings.
In Psalm 110 it reads:
“The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” The Lord shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of Your enemies!” (Psalm 110:1-2)
The Scriptures show that it all has to do with Zion and the restoration of Zion, which will result in the mighty reality that the Lord – after this restoration – will become “King over all the earth” as it says in Zechariah 14:9, and in Psalm 102:16 “For the Lord shall build up Zion; He shall appear in His glory.”
He warned His own people – sitting on a donkey seeing Himself at that time rejected as their king – that they would not see Him again until they would acclaim Him with the words: “Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord.”
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; and assuredly, I say to you, you shall not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ” (Luke 13:34-35)
Amazingly the verse that precisely prophesies this we find in Zechariah 9: 9-10:
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the horse from Jerusalem; the battle bow shall be cut off. He shall speak peace to the nations; His dominion shall be ‘from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.’ “
Here it is prophesied that the Messiah King sitting on a donkey would come to Zion and Jerusalem, to reign and speak peace to the nations. His dominion, if accepted by His people, would be “from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.” So certainly there will come a time, and this is certainly God’s will and destiny for the earth, that when His people will accept Him as King the Lord will reign over all the nations of the earth. But this will not be without Him being first welcomed by His own people. Is this not also true in relation to ourselves? Yes Jesus is King already but He can only reign and be the king in us when we welcome Him as Lord into our hearts and lives. Before that sin and other even demonic powers may reign in us. And no matter how often we may say Jesus reigns or Jesus is Lord, He will not be able to exercise that Lordship over us and our world till we receive and welcome Him into our very lives!
Yes of course it is true, as Jesus said Himself, that ALL POWER in heaven and in earth has been given to Him. But even when that is absolutely true in regard to Him – the co-Creator of the universe, we can only experience the benefit of that all-embracing power when by personal repentance and faith we let Him into our lives as Lord and King. And the world will only experience the benefit of that power and authority when He is received as King by His people in Zion!
Before that happens the Devil will reign in this world and in the cities of this world, as we truly see in respect of the many sinful cities of this world. Does the Lord reign in Amsterdam, in London, in New York, in Tel Aviv? Of course not! Evil and the Evil One rather do at this moment in time!
Jesus, our Lord, Himself warned that – sad but true – at this moment in time the Devil is the prince of this world, and no amount of shouting “Jesus reigns!” is going to alter that UNTIL HE TRULY WILL BE ACCEPTED IN JERUSALEM in tears by the very people to whom He came sitting on that donkey. That’s why Israel and the restoration of Zion is so very crucial and important; because without Israel saying yes to this wonderful King and Messiah He will not be able to come and reign “from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth” (Zechariah 9:10b).
