Is there a Jewish and a Gentile Church?
Is there a Jewish Church and a Gentile Church?
In these days there is an increase of Jewish people finding salvation. There are many that are called Messianic Congregations which do worship Jesus Christ and profess salvation in him by Grace. I have been in discussions with these believers and have been told to let alone the MESSIANIC CHURCH which is made up of Jewish peoples, and let them worship their way. I have been told that since I am a Gentile I do not have to worship their way, but God HAS included me. This sounds to me like they are trying to say there should be TWO CHURCHES; one for the Jewish Believers (Messianic), and one for the Gentiles.
I want to address this question in love and with the Scriptures.
First let me say, I do understand it when we find CULTURE ENTERING INTO HOW A CHURCH FUNCTIONS. I have lived in a number of different communities, made up of different nationalities. In one church in Texas I was in a Church that was largely made up of German people. That church was perhaps one of the most different of all the churches I have served as pastor. They were certainly different in a good way. Boy, did I ever like those dinners on the Grounds when they brought all that good old German recipes. And, I understand when one tells me I AM JEWISH AND LIKE TO DO THINGS AS THE JEWS, an this expresses to me that they are simply at home with the Jewish customs. I hear Black Believers saying things too about how they like to worship certain ways compared to the white. And also here in New Mexico, I hear the Native American saying they like to do it the Native American way. Like I said, I understand the “Cultural” differences, but there is another thing to consider, THE CORRECT DOCTRINAL WAY.
Now let me say, The Bible does not make a difference in Doctrine in the Church. In the Scripture you will not find the descriptions given for a “Gentile Church” verses a “Jewish Church”. I believe that this goes beyond CUSTOM to say: DOCTRINES OF THE CHURCH ARE THE SAME IN ALL THE CHURCHES. The word of God does not have a set of rules for the Jews different from the Gentiles. You will not find such teachings in the Scriptures, especially under the NEW COVENANT. In the writings of the Apostle Paul you will see that he told young Timothy to PREACH SOUND DOCTRINE whereby you would be not turned unto false teaching:
“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” 2 Timothy 4:2-4 (KJV)
The Scriptures actually are teaching us just the opposite (from two churches or division), and that we are to be ONE IN UNITY and we are all to HAVE THE SAME MIND. I think anything less than unity of beliefs would lend to confusion, and certainly the Church does not need any more confusion today. Consider these verses below:
“And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?
Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?
I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.
For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building” 1 Corinthians 3:1-9 (KJV).
Look again at this verse:
“I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” Ephesians 4:1-6 (KJV).
I do not believe God is calling men to be different from each other doctrinally just because we are not the same nationality. I believe the Bible teaches ONLY ONE CHURCH, and that Church is a NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH. The new covenant has led men out of the manner of TYPES AND SHADOW WORSHIP to worship in the SPIRIT OF JESUS CHRIST in a new Covenant relationship. It is wrong to believe that we are called to go back to that which has passed away but all are called to A BETTER COVENANT that has brought men into a much better Community with God. Scriptures tell us that the New Covenant did bring a MUCH MORE COMPLETE WORK in all who believe. The Holy Spirit has moved inside men and He lives with men. In the old economy men were under a sacrificial system which could not make men perfect, but now men are COMPLETE IN CHRIST JESUS. The Jews who came into the Church after all this time since Jesus died and went back to heaven should come into the New Covenant and join the Church IN THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST JESUS, and walk in this New and more perfect way.
It is NOT THAT MEN SHOULD GO BACK TO THE OLD FORMS but, that they who are saved out of the Old should COME TO THE NEW. It is called the ONE CHURCH. Please consider the following verses:
“Forasmuch as ye are declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?
For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.
For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.
For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.
Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech: And not as Moses, which put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same veil untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.
But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the veil is upon their heart.
Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away.
Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord” 2 Corinthians 3:3-18 KJV.
These Scriptures talk of a MORE GLORIOUS CHURCH COMMUNITY not founded upon Old Principals but upon a NEW AND LIVING WAY. Can we not see there is to be no returning to the OLD but to come FORWARD TO THE NEW. These Scriptures, Not I myself, call all Believers to come into the New Testament Church, regardless of who they are, whether they are Jewish or Gentiles. This will be the new and living way.
The Lord does not want TWO CHURCHES but He wants ONE. Let us consider which one most perfectly matches His Word.
“But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father” Ephesians 2:13-18.
