What is your role in Prayer?
Have you ever wondered, “Just how did I get started on this journey of prayer? How did it really begin?”
It is a very awesome journey with our Marvelous Maker, Heavenly Father, Faithful friend, soon coming Messiah, beautiful Bridegroom, Wonderful Counselor and Long-Suffering LORD.
Surely we are called to a never ending adventure as we partner with Him in Prayer.
I would lie to suppose that you are one of the ‘Mission Impossible’ agents being beckoned by the very heart of God.
I would say at some point, you have said, “I want to REALLY know you, LORD!”
I love the song sung by JoAnn McFatter that asks: “Were you born to walk with HIM in the heavenlies? Were you born for the spirit?”
Then she proclaims “You’ve been invited as director to bring heaven on earth.” WOW! That really puts a new spin on the musing of the Psalm when he said, “What is man that you are mindful of him?”
It is mind boggling to think you are co-laboring with the God of the Universe. The heart to know and seek God is birthed in us by God himself.
Pause and Let That Marinate in Your Heart!
Akin to most desires, it is not something that can be forced upon us, but it naturally increases within us when we ‘taste and see that The LORD is good’.
First, I would like to generalize the Intercessor role apart from the ‘prophetic’ aspect. Intercession is a hidden ministry. The secret counsel of The LORD is imparted in the King’s Chambers.
John Sanford states in his book “The Elijah Task” that intercession invites God to come between man and his sin, with the stopping place of the Cross. For the Cross is ultimately the stopping place of everything.
Intercession must be rooted in the Cross. It is not the work of man. Man sometimes moves over into the flesh and tries to control the praying and that becomes witchcraft.
In 1 Corinthians 14:6 Paul says, “How can I benefit you unless I bring you some fresh revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching.”
Intercession must be done through men, but it is only accomplished by The LORD.
“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Hebrews 4:15.
“Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” Hebrews 7:25.
So, once again, Intercession is praying God’s heart God’s way. Taking our mind, will, and emotions and setting them aside.
Taking our hands off the situation and laying down all desires to “fix it”. Are you a fixer? Most of us would like to fix what we have ‘judged’ as wrong or ‘out of order’, but the truth is unless we have the mind of Christ regarding the issue, unless we are in our position seated in heavenly places.
Looking at it through the eyes of The Father, we are the ones mostly ‘out of order’.
This is so prevalent as we intercede for our families or those closest to us. So, first and foremost, we must ascertain the will of The Father and then move in confidence that He works out His Will as we yield ourselves to pray as He directs.
We are not called to manage and direct God but true intercession poses one question, “What sins of mine of he other’s may block God’s rescue and saving action?”
Our Spiritual Authority is proportional to our humility and dependence on God. That dependence is always demonstrated by looking constantly to The LORD for direction. This question sets intercession apart from prayers initiated by man involving thanksgiving, petition, or praise.
Thus, intercession ALWAYS begins with God, not man. The Scripture says,
“And he that searches the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to The Will of God.” Romans 8:7.
So when The Holy Spirit goes into my heart to search it, He already knows something very important: the mind of the Spirit.
That’s what Paul is referring to in Romans. He is speaking of God’s plan for mankind that became subject to the fall of man but redeemed through the blood of Jesus.
So he is praying The Will of The Father as he makes intercession. He is a prayer partner who is your friend who always hits the target, who always knows the beginning from the end and knows God’s Will in every circumstance. Isn’t that wonderful?
Obedience out of fellowship with God is powerful. Our obedience moves God!
We must always be careful not to allow our human reasoning to creep in and appear as discernment.
Once again, back to the heart, we must remember that many of us protect or guard our heart but keep our minds open to the enemy.
Many do not discern, or know how to recognize the thoughts that come to them from the evil spirits.
Thoughts of unkindness, criticism and misjudgment come from the evil one and are not your own, if they do not come from your heart, and the deliberate choice of your will.
So refuse them immediately. We must ask with all our heart, “Lord, make me recognize every thought, word, and suggestion that comes to my mind from Satan’s emissaries.” Then, shut the door.
I spoke about the Helmet of Salvation and the Sword in Part 1 of Intercession posted here on HKP.
The Important Role of Prophetic Intercession
In my opinion, not all Intercessors are Prophetic Intercessors. I believe that all prophets are Intercessors — but not all Intercessors are prophets.
An Intercessor may have a word of knowledge, but a prophet envisions the big picture, thus, they complete the Word with sentences, and bring understanding.
Sometimes the prophet has a wonderful vision, but it takes the work of an Intercessor to pray it through.
The Prophetic Minister will release The Will of The LORD in the earth. The starting point is to have an audience with the King in The Throne Room. So, praise and worship open the gates that take you into The Presence of The LORD.
Having been lifted up, you then can take your position seated in heavenly places, ready to do warfare and do intercession that causes change to take place in the earth.
When I first started praying prophetically, I didn’t realize what I was doing except that I would get a word of knowledge and when I would go to The Word of God and search it out I would just open my mouth, and God began to put my sentences together.
Sometimes, He would give me a Vision, but other times, I would just get a Word or two and The LORD would fill my mouth as I began to speak.
Because the Prophetic Word is initiated by The LORD, it carries the power to breakthrough. It also unlocks miracles.
One thing I have discovered when doing prophetic intercession, I confess my helplessness to The Holy Spirit and my total dependence on Him.
I call of The Spirit of Might and the Mighty Counselor to speak to me. Then I pray in The Spirit until The Holy Spirit ‘takes hold’ of the need as stated in Romans 8:26-27. Indeed, He prays the perfect prayer.
Prophetic intercession may come in the form of a spontaneous song. The LORD speaks to me through songs many times.
That is amazing, because I am not really a singer, but I truly have a song in my heart, and as a former dancer, I have much music stored up in my soul.
To many, God will give new songs, songs of deliverance, songs of praise, songs of war — see Psalm 40:3.
So, to sum it up, in Prophetic Intercession, God puts His Words in our minds, in our hearts, and then fills our mouths.
Whatever word He gives us, He will perform. He watches over His Word to perform it. It may come in the dance, song, prayer or word but when He releases it, He will do it.
Prophetic Proclamations
One last thing I would like to mention is Prophetic Proclamations.
The Word of God is powerful and mighty to save. I have prayed many times, “LORD, I want to be the right person, at the right place, at the right time, doing and saying the right thing, and bringing forth the right results.”
In other words, I want understanding of the times, because you have a strategic time for all things including breakthrough prayer.
Prophetic Proclamations are calling forth the promises of God and bringing manifestation to many needs.
What we Decree or Proclaim The Word, so it is established as we speak forth the Prophetic Vision with authority.

I have a problem understanding what the meaning of prophetic means.
Thought I had read part 2 but it was part 1, I had read and commented on. Sorry.
This is a goldmine of information, Sandi. Thank you for putting it together so well for us!
Love you sis. God bless you more and more in the days that lie ahead.
Thank you for this. I needed to hear some of these things, especially we must always be careful not to allow our human reasoning to creep in and appear as discernment. And praise & worship open the gates that take you into the presence of the Lord. And also obedience out of fellowship with God is powerful. Our obedience moves God!
You are so welcome Lois, we all need ongoing understanding of intercession as God’s warriors especially in this hour of some much witchcraft working through deception and darkness. Keep praying dear sister. We win!! Blessings abundant! Sandi Holman
