It is a terrible misunderstanding about what actually happened on the Day of Pentecost. The misunderstanding comes in when many have read later the Apostle Paul’s warnings to the Christians in Corinth describing the use of tongues and prophesying. It is only by Spiritual Discernment on how to rationalize the difference and what Paul was addressing when he said in,

1 Corinthians 14:23, “If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and come together into one place, and ALL SPEAK WITH TONGUES, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?”

It is therefore assumed by many that to do so, (All the Church to speak in tongues ALL AT THE SAME TIME, OR TO EVEN SPEAK IN TONGUES IN THE CHURCH), would be OUT OF ORDER and FORBIDDEN. In order to give a Scriptural answer their misunderstandings, one only need to carefully read again the Account in Acts 2 what actually happened that day:

Acts 2:4 “And they were ALL FILLED with the Holy Ghost, and (they all) began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Yes, it did say that they ALL DID SPEAK IN TONGUES AT THE SAME TIME. It leaves no room for question than that what occurred was that the Whole Church in the Upper room did speak ALL AT THE SAME TIME IN TONGUES. Well someone said, There must be something wrong, perhaps you are not reading this correctly because it APPEARS TO BE A DIRECT CONTRADICTION of what Paul taught later in Corinth. IS IT PROPER TO SPEAK… IN CHURCH… ALL AT THE SAME TIME IN TONGUES??? And did Paul have a DIFFERENT UNDERSTANDING? What is being said to us here?

I came to understand many years ago a principal that is important when reading Scripture, that understanding is, THE FIRST MENTION PRINCIPAL. Any time you have, for the first time, a doctrine mentioned in the Scriptures there will be meaning to that Doctrine which will follow through all the way to the end of the teaching. In other words, what happened that day was a Scriptural GUIDELINE for the future of that teaching. It appears than that God did place his APPROVAL UPON HIS CHURCH SPEAKING IN TONGUES…. ALL AT THE SAME TIME… IN TONGUES.

Now it is no question here that those who had met together in that upper room constituted a Church. The fact is they were the Church and there is no doubt to this, than this HAPPENED IN THE CHURCH ASSEMBLY. It should be noted that the Same scripture that says they ALL TALKED IN TONGUES AT ONCE, all 120 of them, in that room.

How than do we reconcile or understand the meaning here of the Tongues they were all speaking? There must be an answer and there is one and the ANSWER IS RIGHT ON THE END OF YOUR NOSE.. they were NOT SPEAKING IN THE MINISTRY GIFT OF DELIVERING A MESSAGE TO THE CHURCH WHICH WOULD BE REQUIRED TO HAVE AN INTERPRETATION, but they were SPEAKING IN A PRAYER AND PRAISE LANGUAGE. As was here and many modern day events like the first Pentecost, many have been in the presents of tongues speakers and have heard their language from men who were unlearned or skilled in speaking the language. As a result we have heard of many being saved this way because they became aware that the people or person was speaking by supernatural power. To those who were speaking tongues IT WAS ALL UNKNOWN TONGUES. AND… MANY HAVE GONE TO A MEETING WHERE A GIFTED MINISTER DOES DELIVER A MESSAGE IN TONGUES AND THERE IS AN INTERPRETATION WHICH BLESSES THEM.

The Teachings of Paul later explained that NOT ALL MEN DID HAVE A MINISTRY GIFT. In 1 Corinthians 12:27-30, he said not everyone spoke in tongues or moved in interpretation. THESE GIFTS WERE RESERVED FOR CERTAIN ONES WHO THE LORD WOULD APPOINT TO RECEIVE THEM. We read and understand in these verses that these Gifts were given to the Five Fold Ministry of, Apostles, Prophets, Pastors, Teachers, and Evangelist.

Many people who do not understand do not know that there even exist different kinds of tongues. The Scriptures do teach us clearly that there are DIVERSITY OF TONGUES.

1 Corinthians 12:10b “….To another DIVERS KINDS OF TONGUES; to another the interpretation of tongues.”

It is CLEAR HERE that the Lord has given more than ONE KIND OF TONGUES. This is where many go astray. It is understood by those who receive the meaning in the Spirit that there are A KIND OF TONGUES THAT COME TO ALL MEN, and A KIND OF TONGUES THAT ARE ONLY GIVEN TO THE FIVE FOLD MINISTRY.

The FIRST GIFT (taught in the First Mention of Tongues) is the GIFT OF A PRAYER LANGUAGE and this Gift was given to ALL BELIEVERS UPON RECEIPT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT and is clearly seen as THE EVIDENCE OF THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. Every mention of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts was FOLLOWED BY TONGUES. There was also mentioned that there was the Gift of PROPHESYING (the gift of empowering one to preach the Word and explain it supernaturally). Both these Gifts were mentioned in the Acts 2. All did AT ONE TIME speak in the Prayer and Praise Language and Peter did stand and Prophecy. The Holy Spirit did supernaturally cause many who did come in later and witness this event who were unbelievers to hear their own languages in prayer and praise causing them to be stirred to salvation upon the clear teaching of Peter. The Scripture says on that day, Peter the Fisherman became Peter the Preacher!

To again prove this lesson we read Paul’s description of a PRAYER TONGUE that was spoken to ONLY GOD and was for PERSONAL EDIFYING AND ENLIGHTENMENT.

1 Corinthians 14:2-4 “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh NOT TO MEN, but UNTO GOD; for no man understandeth him; howbet in the Spirit he speaketh Mysteries.
But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
HE THAT SPEAKETH IN AN UNKNOWN TONGUE EDIFIETH HIMSELF; but he that prophesieth edifieth the Church.”

SUMMARY:

It is therefore clear to the Bible Student that there was more than one kind of tongue gift given to the church. There is the Gift of Prayer and Praise Tongues given to ALL to be used by ALL in the Church, even if they do so ALL AT ONE TIME; and there is the Gift of Prophesying given to a few who will move in a Special Ministry Gifting, the Five Fold Ministry.
