Have We Lost Something of the Art of Prayer?
Is there something missing from our prayers that folk ‘way back when’ used to have?
I read recently that most Revivals, where some details have been left to us, started on the back of a very few dedicated pray-ers.
Did these old saints have something we don’t have?
I doubt it very much, but perhaps they had something which we don’t seem to use very much these days.
We hear about 24/7 prayer groups where dedicated teams of prayer warriors cover the world in prayer — in 3-6 hour shifts, and sometimes even shorter shifts.
Yet we are told that the older folk, usually quite literally ancient old souls, prayed with a fervour and stamina that we either don’t appear to have these days, or certainly don’t exercise any more.
When was the last time you heard of even a 24-hour meeting?
A 36-hour one, or even a 48-hour or more prayer meeting?
When was the last time we wept over our family, our streets, our town, or our country?
The most powerful prayer meeting I have ever been in was in Norway.
A 40 feet long map of Norway was drawn out in some detail — a lot of effort went into it. The map was laid out across the whole width of the Church.
The Pastor then invited people to pinpoint their town or area on the map and pray for it. Just two hours later that map was a wreck — as were most of us in the meeting.
People marked the map as directed then prayed for the town or area they highlighted.
Then they prayed, and wept, and prayed, and wept some more.
The map was running in the tears of those prayer warriors.
Children as young as 9 or 10 were prostrated on the map crying out for their land.
Adults of all ages, following the children’s example, prostrated themselves and wept.
The noise was incredible — so was the tangible presence of God in that small gathering.
I had never seen it before and I haven’t seen it again since.
Perhaps we all need to get some of the fervour in our prayer meeting this week?
Perhaps then we might just see the beginnings of Revival?

Do you ask for it?
Any further thoughts.
