How are you to live? How do you know where to go and what to do?

Proverbs 4:13 says:

“Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life,” NIV emphasis added.

The focus is on “instruction.”

And the verse simply says: when you follow a certain instruction, it becomes your life……

So what instruction are you to follow?

An ‘instruction’ is a synonym for ‘commandment’. And Jesus touches on this when someone asked Him what the greatest commandment was.

Matthew 22:37 shows Jesus reply:

“Jesus said unto him, ‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind’,.” KJV.

This verse talks about loving God will your whole being — heart, soul, and mind. One cannot do this if God is an afterthought or in second place to one’s desires.

One can only love God with their whole being if He is first in his or her life.

To reiterate, the “instruction” in Proverbs 4:13 is this: ‘To put God first in all that you do‘…..

When God is ^#1 in your life then everything becomes about Him. That includes your health, problems, desires, motives, etc. All of who you are becomes about Him and His Spirit within you.

When everything is about God then God becomes your life.

When this happens, you get to live with God and know Him. You begin to understand who He is. And you get to receive His wisdom, so you know what to do with your life and how to do the things He put in your life to do.

Hold onto God for He is your life. As you do this, He teaches you, guards you, guides you, protects you, and loves you.

The Holy Spirit adds: “My People, I AM here and I AM with you. I want you to grow and develop and learn what it means to follow Me and know Me.

Follow the instruction — put Me First and things will go well with you.”
