Friend, Guard Your Heart!
Our heart is our very own unique expression — the deepest part of what is truly us. It’s the deep well from where our dreams, desires, passions, motives, thoughts, emotions, decisions, and actions are found.
So, it’s no wonder that the Scripture says to guard it! Our heart really does “determine the course” of our lives — both here and beyond.
Friend, guard your heart.
Guard it from idols. The heart is the place where the God we worship speaks.
The true God will call you to acts of “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23), while all other gods —whether money, sex, or power — will lead you away from peace, good judgment, discernment and honesty.
Guarding our heart doesn’t require us building a fence around it, but instead, having the true God living within it — pushing all competitors out.
Guarding our heart also means watching what we take into our minds. What we read and see over and over again will eventually make it’s way into our spiritual and emotional heart. Reading the Bible on a regular basis will help to get God’s truths into our inner being. This is healthy.
….. My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to My words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body, (Proverbs 4:20-22).
