Are you on a quest for personal success?

How are you doing in that venture? Would you like to receive a great word of encouragement right here in the middle of 2020?

In many ways, all of us are hoping for some measure of success. No one wants to be a failure in life. But sometimes, success and prosperity may look a lot different than we would imagine. So, in this letter, let’s consider what it means to find true success.

A Random Thought

Recently, while signing some letters, an unexpected insight came to me as I was writing a P.S. on our reply to a long-time DPM supporter who leads a ministry on the west coast.

Here is what I said in my handwritten note:

“Hi, Mary! We thank The LORD for you, and pray that He will grant you health, strength, and success.”

That word “success” came somewhat randomly to me — as did the Bible verse about “succeeding” which The LORD immediately brought to mind from 2 Chronicles 20.

As I started to add the citation, I realized I didn’t know the actual verse where this concept was mentioned. So, when I did a quick search in my NAS pocket Bible, I found the concept in verse 20:20. (That has a ring to it, doesn’t it?)

The coincidence impressed me so much that I added this thought at the end of my postscript: “A good word for 2020, eh?”

An Uplifting Word

Do you find yourself longing for A Word of Encouragement after a tough few months in 2020?

As we look together at the success mentioned in verse 20 of 2 Chronicles 20, it is significant that this clear promise came in the midst of a time of great crisis — much like what we have all experienced so far this year.

Here is the setting. The armies of three nations had amassed against the children of Israel. King Jehoshaphat had called for a national fast, and then had spoken the following words of prayer to The LORD in 2 Chronicles 20:9,

“If disaster comes upon us — sword, judgment, pestilence [like COVID-19], or famine — we will stand before this house and in Your presence (for Your name is in this temple) and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.”

After his prayer, prophetic words came forth telling them that they would not need to fight. The battle was The LORD’s, and He would fight it for them.

The Promise to Succeed/ Prosper

Even with the promise of God’s help, the children of Israel still had to prepare for battle. They still had to stand against the enemy. (Many sermons could be preached on that one point.)

But as they were going out to face their foes, here is what Jehoshaphat said to them in verse 20:

“Believe in The LORD your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.”

NAS says:

“Put your trust in His prophets and succeed.”

In the midst of overwhelming, life-threatening odds came a promise of success and prosperity! Does that encourage you?

We usually associate success and prosperity with financial increase. But in this case, it meant rescue and life in the place of defeat and death.

This type of success parallels the prayer of John, in 3 John 2:

“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.”

Such success goes far beyond financial prosperity. It is a success that encompasses every aspect of life.

God Wants Us to Succeed

Derek Prince examines this 3 John passage in a profound message called “Times and Seasons.”

After mentioning the story of Jehoshaphat cited earlier, Derek comments (among other insights) about God’s desire to bring success in life to you and me. If you like, you may read along as you listen to Derek.

“This verse [3 John 2] is very clearly addressed to an individual believer. There is no doubt about that. It expresses God’s will for that individual and it covers three areas.

It covers the area of the soul, the inward man. It covers the area of the physical body, which is health. It covers the area of what we own and what we do — our homes, our businesses, our activities. All of this is under the heading of prosperity.

The will of God is good in every area. It’s good in the inward man; it’s good in the physical man; and it’s good in our material and financial situations — that which we own, which, in a certain sense, is part of us and which is an extension of us.

We need to see that God’s will is good in every area and department of our life. That is very important. You need to grasp that and lay hold of it. God does not will you ill in any area of your life. He wills that your soul prosper, that your body be in health, and that you prosper financially and materially.”

The One to Whom We Turn

In these uncertain times, do you want to prosper? Do you want to find true success? Let’s bear in mind that it may look different than our normal concepts of prosperity and success. With that in mind, why don’t you and I come to The LORD now and ask Him for it?

Dear LORD, I want to find true success in life — not the false or superficial kind usually presented to us, but the success and prosperity that can come only from You.

I turn from my own ideas of what that may look like, and I open myself up to Your creative will — and all that You desire to provide for me.

I thank You in advance for Your faithfulness. I place my trust in You, believing Your Word that I will be established.

Also, I remind myself of what has been spoken over me prophetically, and I receive those promises as well.

From Your hand, I now receive the success only You can bring. Amen.

Moving Forward

This prayer may be a step you have taken in the past. It certainly doesn’t hurt to do it again — and what we have prayed reminds us of the real Source of the right kind of success and prosperity.

Our Next Steps

The right kind of success is promised to us — but it isn’t automatic. We still have to take steps of faith to receive it and walk in it.

I think of the life of David, when he and his men had suffered great loss and failure (see 1 Samuel 30).

In that time of adversity, David asked The LORD in verse 8 what to do next: “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?” ( In effect, David was asking The LORD if he would be successful in his next steps.)

What did David do? He sought The LORD and waited for His answer, which was as follows: “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.”

In obedience to that word, David moved ahead — and he experienced victory and success.

It’s the same for you and me. Only as we wait on Him do we find true success.
