Feet Washing
“After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?” John 13:5-6
Although washing your feet when entering a home was customary, it was not a task done during a meal.
In addition, another person washing your feet was considered such a low position that only a non-Jewish slave was considered fit for such a task.
Yet, the Son of Man [God] saw it fit to wash the feet of His creation… including the one who would soon betray Him.
Feet have a dual meaning: it represents that which is lowly[meek] or humble, but it also represents our [spiritual] walk and/ or path.
Later, Paul quoted Isaiah when he said,
“Beautiful are the feet of them that preach the Gospel of Peace, and bring glad tidings of good things,” Romans 10:15
In Ephesians 6, when referencing the armor of God, Paul commands that we cover[shield] our feet with the Gospel of Peace.
Jesus, in Hebrew is called, ‘Yeshua Sar Shalom:” — the Prince of Peace.
Christ is our Gospel of Peace. He is the good news brought to the poor in spirit, the blind, the captive, and the broken-hearted. And He presented Himself lowly and meek of heart (Matthew 11:29).
Jesus is STILL washing the feet of His creation today.
The Prince of Peace still presents Himself lowly and meek because when we come to Him, we come to The Cross. And through the Blood He shed on that Cross, the filth of our path is washed away; made clean.
Christ commands that we, as His disciples, do the same: wash the feet of those whose (filthy) paths have lead them astray and present the gospel to them.
Thus, in doing so, you are introducing them to the Prince of Peace.
