Destiny Stealer: Dying Too Much
There is a sneak attack that Satan uses to keep you from your destiny: getting you to die way too much by overreacting to your sin, which kills your passion. It can even kill your God-given passion.
A powerful, transformed life
To experience your destiny through a radically transformed life, start with renewed thinking. It is interesting that while writing about finding God’s will for your life, the Apostle Paul says we must first change our thinking by renewing our minds.
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” Romans 12:2 NIV.
Die to your old sin nature
The process of renewing your mind involves a principle called dying to yourself. There are several verses in the Bible that talk about dying to the sinful nature or “old self” and allowing God to live through us. This is a necessary process for transforming your life. However, it is also a misunderstood principle.
Satan wants us to take this to the extreme and believe that we must die to all of our heart desires and plans that we have.
Did you die to all desires?
In reality, dying to ourselves does not mean that we cannot have any desires or ideas of our own. If that were the case, you would become a robot for God. God wants us to be his sons and daughters and to have authority on the earth.
Creativity from God
God created the Heavens and the earth and we are created in His image (Genesis 1:27). Therefore, we all have the ability to be co-creators expanding His Kingdom on earth. Whether you realize this or not, we are all creative. You have a God-given ability and passion inside to create things around you. You have a built-in desire to contribute to things greater than yourself, and be a part of changing the world around you through God’s unlimited love and power.
I often jokingly say that God was trying to prophesy this through Bruce Willis in the old movie “Die Hard.” God wants to give us good things and once our motives are right, He can do this without limit. It is no wonder that so many people don’t know their destiny; it may be because they have died to any desire they once had.
Dying to yourself means that your heart has the right intentions because not all of our desires are necessarily from God. I remember when I was young I learned how to spell the word Christian. A lady told me it is spelled “Christ” plus the acronym i-a-n, which stands for “I am nothing.” I grew up believing the lie that I was not allowed to be anything. I realize now that God wants us to be His creation. It will require dying to our sinful desires but also living a life full of His creativeness.
Revived desires
When you renew your mind, you are powerful! And when you focus on God, finding happiness in Him, your passions will be revived, even after a harsh enemy sneak attack designed to kill your desires and passions.
“Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart” Psalm 37:4.
Desires are needed
God will give us a passion or strong desire to fulfill something in our lives. Passion is important because it brings about a divinely-inspired drive to accomplish things for God. And while it is not good to die to all desires, we also need balance.
For example, we do not want to be too prideful but on the other extreme, we do not want false humility. We often quote the Bible verse, “He must become greater and I must become less…” John 3:30. The problem with false humility is when you try to become less without allowing God’s character and gifts in you to become greater, you wind up empty.
What to do
Hold onto your God-given passions and desires. Let God remind you of what they are if it has been a long time since you died to them. You have permission to be passionate and creative! Your desires are an essential tool designed to lead you to the heart of your destiny.
