Contend For GOD’s Promises In the Spirit and Power of Elijah
Imagine doing it like Elijah — demonstrating The Power of GOD through prayer and getting your prayers answered like his!
Well, this is a promise we have in JESUS with Divine Certainty.
“Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” James 5:16 NLT.
“Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.” James 5:17-18 NKJV.
Thus, like John the Baptist, we are to go forth in the spirit and power of Elijah to do great and mighty things for The Glory of JESUS.
“He [John the Baptist] will also go before Him [THE LORD JESUS] in the spirit and power of Elijah…” Luke 1:17.
THE HOLY SPIRIT is emphatic with instructive command to us: The believer in JESUS CHRIST must PRAY like Elijah, (James 5:16-18).
How did Elijah pray?
PERSISTENTLY. Relentlessly. Always praying without losing heart — exactly how our LORD JESUS CHRIST has commanded us to pray. We are to stay in prayer and expectation until JESUS shows up. (See Luke 18:1-8).
Like a woman in labour, it can be painful going through spiritual birthing (which is what the prayer process is). But you just have to push harder and harder by The Help of THE HOLY SPIRIT until the answer is birthed in the flesh.
You cannot afford to give in or give up. If you do, the answered prayer is in danger of dying right in the birth canal.
Can you imagine a woman in labour giving up pushing the baby out? Yet this is what many believers do in their expectation and waiting for answer to prayer.
Like her, although you are exhausted in the process, you just have to PUSH! PUSH! PUSH! And sooner than later, you’ll have the answer manifested with great joy.
We have to be immovable, and moving forward in prayer like our Master Himself:
“And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His Sweat became like Great Drops of Blood falling down to the ground.” Luke 22:44.
You must not quit praying if there is delay.
Daniel’s answer was released to his prayer from the very first day he prayed. But Satan resisted and hindered the delivery angel.
However, Daniel continued to pray PERSISTENTLY and relentlessly, and the arch angel Michael was sent by GOD to take on the devil.
Only then did the delivery angel have the freedom to go to Daniel with the answer to his prayer.
If Daniel had given up during the excruciating waiting period, he will never have received the answer to his prayer.
A lot of our prayers still go through this same experience. JESUS clearly taught this understanding in Luke 18:1–8 for instruction and encouragement.
But many lose hope and quit praying, and the dispatched answer never gets to them.
“Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving;” Colossians 4:2.
Contend until you contain; Contend until you obtain
In the ‘Elijah prayer life’, you have to pray until you contain the situation; you have to pray until you obtain the answer from GOD.
In the ‘Elijah prayer life’, you have to seek and depend on THE HOLY SPIRIT to know what to pray, how to pray, where to pray and when to pray.
And you have to keep on praying as led by THE HOLY SPIRIT until you see the manifestation, being watchful to know and act on instructions He is giving you.
If you don’t do this, you’ll pray amiss, not get the answer, and be frustrated.
Pray like Elijah
I find it very instructive and encouraging.
THE LORD told Elijah: “Go, present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the earth.” (1 Kings 18:1).
But, guess what? It wasn’t that straight forward as it may appear.
At THE WORD OF LORD, Elijah had to demonstrate THE SPIRIT and Power on Mount Carmel; and GOD answered by FIRE! And Elijah overcame the prophets of baal.
But, after all that AMAZING drama on Mount Carmel demonstrating The Faithfulness and The Power of GOD, there was not even a droplet of rain!
Did not GOD say to the prophet: “Go, present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the earth.”?
Yet this did not happen automatically. Elijah had to PRAY earnestly and relentlessly before THE LORD sent the rain He had promised him, (1 Kings 18).
I have experienced this time and again. JESUS would assuredly say to me very SWEETLY to go somewhere and He will do this and that.
I would show up only to find myself in raging battles and blockades, and having to contend relentlessly before breaking through and obtaining what THE LORD had promised me.
It is called “His Ways” (Psalm 103:7). You have to know and understand GOD’s Ways — how He does His Things, and how to fight in spiritual warfare.
Otherwise, you will be angry, frustrated, and disappointed in the process of obtaining what GOD has promised you.
We are in war, brethren. The Christian walk is the walk of war. But our victory is guaranteed if we advance behind JESUS, our Master, Mighty Warrior and The King of Glory.
Pursue JESUS persistently
JESUS likes it very much when we pursue Him PERSISTENTLY, walking closely with Him. This is what He desires of us and from us above all things: obedience of Him and fellowship with Him.
Walking closely with JESUS is our call.
Enoch pleased Him when he did, (Hebrews 11:5). Likewise when Moses did, he found Grace (Favour) in The Sight of THE LORD and THE LORD showed Him all His Goodness, (Exodus 33:13-23).
Jacob even wrestled with The Almighty GOD, and THE LORD really liked that and blessed him just as he had persisted and prayed.
John was so intimate with THE LORD, so much so that he even rested in His Bosom at The Passover Supper just before JESUS was arrested and crucified, putting his head to His Heart. And THE HOLY SPIRIT moved John himself to note in Scripture repeatedly that he was “the disciple whom JESUS loved.” (John 13:23; 19:26; 20:2; 21:7,20).
(GOD loves and has A Special Bond with those who walk closely with Him by keeping His Commandments. See John 14:21, 23).
Eventually what happened? With his continued pursuit of and intimacy with THE LORD, John was given the most intriguing, dramatic and awesome revelations in all of Scripture: The Book of Revelation.
JESUS has the very best for those who walk closest with Him in obedience and intimacy; in praise, prayer and THE WORD.
Pursue JESUS. Let Him be your Priority and Pursuit with every breath you breathe. Let Him be your Priority and Pursuit in all things at all times.
Pray till JESUS shows up for you. Seek and depend on His HOLY SPIRIT in all things and for all things. And you will have Good Success as you study and obey His WORD, (Joshua 1:8).
Earnestly pray like Elijah, contend and obtain The Promises of GOD in this season —- being The Times of The Restoration of all things, (Acts 3:19–21).
“The LORD Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.” 2 Timothy 4:22.
“Farewell” Acts 15:29.
~ Jacob Addison Awagah
Jacob, an apostle of JESUS CHRIST by The Will of GOD, according to The Promise of Life Which is in CHRIST JESUS, (2 Timothy 1:1).
Like John, I like to put my head to The Heart of JESUS so as to know and do His Will always. What’s in His Heart is what matters now and FOREVER. His Heart’s Desire is my only desire. My will is to do His Will.
As John was, I am the disciple whom JESUS loves. And like Paul, I am “the prisoner of CHRIST JESUS” (Ephesians 3:1) for His Purpose forever: to obey Him always.
NB. Surely, the disciple whom JESUS loves and “the prisoner of CHRIST JESUS”, like ALL The Promises of GOD, are available to every believer to obtain, just as John and Paul did.
“And having been perfected, He [JESUS] became The Author of Eternal Salvation to all who obey Him,” Hebrews 5:9.
Apostle Jacob, thanks for sharing this message which is just for me. The words described how am stubbornly praying like Prophet Elijah & crying out to Jesus like the blind man in Luke 18 : 35-43. I will continue to pray without ceasing until I see answers.
