Confidence Requires Faith Hope and Love
A psalmist of the old covenant wrote, “For You are my hope; Lord GOD, You are my confidence from my youth.” Psalm 71:5 and,
- Give ear, O my people, to my instruction;
- listen to the words of my mouth.
- I will open my mouth in parables;
- I will utter things hidden from the beginning,
- that we have heard and known
- and our fathers have relayed to us.
- We will not hide them from their children,
- but will declare to the next generation
- the praises of the LORD and His might,
- and the wonders He has performed.
- For He established a testimony in Jacob
- and appointed a law in Israel,
- which He commanded our fathers
- to teach to their children,
- that the coming generation would know them—
- even children yet to be born—
- to arise and tell their own children
- that they should put their confidence in God,
- not forgetting His works,
- but keeping His commandments.
- Then they will not be like their fathers,
- a stubborn and rebellious generation,
- whose heart was not loyal,
- whose spirit was not faithful to God.” Psalm 78:1-7.
Exhibit confidence in God with one another and train up your to children in it.
Paul wrote to the Thessalonians and us about confidence, faith, hope, and love.
“We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is only fitting, because your faith is increasing abundantly, and the love of each and every one of you toward one another grows ever greater. As a result, we ourselves speak proudly of you among the churches of God for your perseverance and faith in the midst of all your persecutions and afflictions which you endure. This is a plain indication of God’s righteous judgment so that you will be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you indeed are suffering. For after all it is only right for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted, along with us, when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God, and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These people will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes to be glorified among His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed — because our testimony to you was believed. To this end also we pray for you always, that our God will consider you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, in accordance with the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Thessalonians 1:3-12 emphasis added.
Paul wrote this about love.
“Love is patient, love is kind, it is not jealous; love does not brag, it is not arrogant. It does not act disgracefully, it does not seek its own benefit; it is not provoked, does not keep an account of a wrong suffered, it does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; it keeps every confidence, it believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away with; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away with. For we know in part and prophesy in part; but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away with. When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully, just as I also have been fully known. But now faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-13.
In that vein, Paul wrote how it should be when we gather with one another. (1 Corinthians 14:1-40)
“What is the outcome then, brothers and sisters? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. All things are to be done for edification.” 1 Corinthians 14:26.
