British Curses: Identificational Repentance
As a background to my earlier post on identificational repentance, “The UK and Identificational Repentance“ (See below).
I offer these Prayer Points for anyone who may be affected by these ancient curses and who may wish to use them in their own prayers of repentance.
The curses were represented usually by unbelievably harsh actions, laws, and edicts carried out by the mostly English aristocracy, although some were inflicted upon the unfortunate people by their own countrymen and families!
Curses in the Four Nations — Prayer Points
The Welsh Curses:
All Welshmen were forbidden to serve in any government or judicial positions.
They were forbidden to own any weapons, armour, castles or fortified houses.
There is a medieval law that has never been repealed.
In border towns and cities, like Chester, if a Welshman was found on the streets after dark, it was quite legal to shoot him with your bow and arrow.
Even food couldn’t be sent to Wales from England without royal consent.
The Irish Curses:
To dilute Catholic sympathies, the English King ordered that thousands of English and Scottish families were to be moved to Ireland in what are known as ‘‘The Plantations.’’ This commenced in 1556 and continued for over 100 years.
Much land owned by the Irish Catholics was confiscated and sold cheaply to Protestants. It’s estimated that about 100,000 Protestants were murdered by the Catholics during this time.
Catholic education was forbidden; they couldn’t buy or trade to support their families; they had to pay a penalty for every Sunday they didn’t attend an Anglican church.
The Catholic church was outlawed, as was the Gaelic language; and Protestants were forbidden to hire Catholics.
Catholics who converted to Anglicanism could, however, keep their land or inherit the same.
Oliver Cromwell added to the persecution of Irish and other Catholics and deported over 50,000 to the Caribbean as prisoners of war and indentured servants.
The Irish responded with ‘The Curse of Cromwell on you’ to all Englishmen.
During Cromwell’s time Ireland’s population dropped from 1.46 million to only 616,000. So, 850,000 died by sword, plague, famine, hardship or banishment between 1641 and 1652.
The Scots Curses:
The Reformation was brought to Scotland by John Knox (1514-1572)
His preaching and actions resulted in Scotland being declared a Reformed Protestant nation at the Treaty of Edinburgh in 1560.
The Anglicans tried to force Scotland into their religious preferences.
The Scots rejected the concept that the King of England was head of the church claiming that belonged only to Jesus Christ.
This resulted in the National Covenant of Scotland in 1638, proclaiming loyalty to Jesus’ Kingship and His Word.
The Solemn League and Covenant that declared the preservation of the Reformation of England, Scotland and Ireland followed this in 1643.
Many people signed this in their own blood and added ‘until death’ to signify how serious they were. (A blood covenant is forbidden by God in Scripture) These were known as ‘Covenanters’.
This needs repentance to God and self-forgiveness to break this if it’s in your family line.
The English King and the Anglican Church regarded these covenants as treasonous.
It resulted in violent persecution of the Scots and we all know the punishment for treason.
Wearing tartan, speaking Gaelic and carrying weapons were seriously punished.
The persecution of the Covenanters increased with many thousands of Scots tortured and killed mercilessly for their faith.
Finally, the English King James 2nd was overthrown and replaced in 1689 by William and Mary from Holland who were Protestants and Masons.
They brought a measure of religious liberty to Britain.
Another spiritually significant issue arouse for the Scots. These were entitled ‘’The Clearances.’’
The Clearances were a controversial process that resulted in the displacement of thousands of people from their homes and land in the Highlands and western islands of Scotland.
The Clearances had devastating consequences for the people who were forced to leave, with some starving or freezing to death.
The Clearances also destroyed the traditional clan society and led to a pattern of rural depopulation and emigration from Scotland.
All, I believe, to allow the spread of profitable sheep farming. They ran from 1763 until 1881.
Huge numbers of these dispossessed people migrated to Canada, The United States of America, Australia and New Zealand.
Many of the displaced families had lived in the same places for over 500 years
There is plenty of evidence of these clan chiefs and nobles selling their clan’s members (who they were related to) into slavery.
Many slaves were sent to the Caribbean and the USA
One evicted almost 50% of his own clan. Many refused aid to starving tenants and those who wouldn’t immigrate were shipping to Canada in appalling conditions of which many did not survive their journey.
‘’The Highland Clearances were nothing short of the displacement and attempted genocide of the Gaelic speaking people,’’ stated James of Glencarr.
A Summary of Other British Issues of interest:
During the 1700’s and the 1800’s, on way for a young man in Britain to earn a living (and maybe make a name for himself) was to join the military.
It’s well known that every British Army regiment had its own Masonic lodge within it.
That’s partly why Masonic Lodges spread so widely to the British Colonies around the globe.
Corrupt financial and ‘land acquisition’ practices by the City of London (the financial centre run by the Freemasons for centuries) were often facilitated by these Masonic connections.
During this period Britain suffered with as much poverty as France. But, France had a violent revolution in 1793 and Britain didn’t.
The probable reason for this can be explained by the actions and prayers of Christian leaders such as George Whitfield, the Wesley Brothers and others who sought a spiritual revolution within the Gospel of Jesus Christ rather than a political revolution.
It was also Christians such as William Wilberforce who ensured that slavery was abolished globally.
I hope these notes help any of you who wish to understand more about identificational repentance.
Pray and ask The Holy Spirit if you need to repent for anything in your ancestral line that is covered here.
All that I have posted here is available on-line. I got mine from Dr Selwyn Stevens
God bless you all!

~ Chris G. Bennett
Chris Bennett came to salvation in 1962 but didn’t begin ministry until 2007 — a late-comer! Now mandated by The LORD to prophesy and open old wells of revival in the U.K., but especially in Wales. He has also operated Healing Rooms, and worked with deliverance teams, all with his wife, Linda. Happily now doing whatever The LORD asks of them! Founder, with wife Linda, of their ministry The Upper Room Encounter.
I was freed of all this when I accepted the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ to pay for my salvation. I’m the righteousness of God in Christ! Praise Him alone!
Wow Chris – That’s quite an interesting history lesson you posted; hadn’t known that. Sure explains centuries, old hatreds between various cultures denominations, people groups. Seems we all in God’s remnant endtime army of believers- under one banner – The Lord Jesus Christ, have our ‘prayer work’ cut out for us. Much generational repentance, healing, etc to go forth. Thanks for sharing.
Once again, we discover that old wounds run very deep, old hatreds have been cemented in place, and unforgiveness still reigns. It’s all very sad!
