BREXIT LIVE: Panicked Merkel requests meeting with Johnson as German economy trembles.
ANGELA MERKEL has requested a meeting with Boris Johnson as the panicked Chancellor continues to worry about the massive damage a no deal Brexit could inflict on Germany’s crumbling economy.

Germany could force the European Union to face “existential risks” after new reports showed the bloc’s biggest economy shrunk again in the second quarter of this year.

The country’s economy declined by 0.1 percent, sending markets into a frenzy over growing fears around an impending recession. Angela Merkel is continuing to dismiss concerns over the current state of the economy.

But a chaotic no deal Brexit, which would see Britain crash out of the EU without an agreement, would put hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk, particularly in Germany’s lucrative manufacturing sector.

German Government spokesman Steffen Seibert, speaking in Berlin earlier today, did not reveal a date for the meeting between Mrs Merkel and Boris Johnson.

But he added it is being planned for the near future, while Brexit would be among a number of topics being discussed.

Mr Johnson is expected to travel to Berlin next week to meet the German chancellor.
