Angels in the Bible
The Lord God Almighty is referred to in the Bible as The Lord of Hosts or more literally The Lord of Armies. Hosts or Armies, in this case being the countless Angels. As such Angels are referred to throughout the Bible. No matter how you look at them, angels are an important and integral part of God’s creation. Psalm 89:5-9 (ERV) has this to say about them:
“LORD, the heavens praise you for the amazing things you do. The assembly of holy ones sings about your loyalty. No one in heaven is equal to the LORD. None of the “gods” can compare to the LORD.
When God’s holy ones – the angels around his throne – meet together, they fear and respect him; he is more awesome than all those around him.
LORD God All-Powerful, there is no one like you. You are strong, LORD, and always faithful. You rule the stormy sea. You can calm its angry waves.”
The following are descriptions of the characteristics of Angel in the Bible with their scriptural reference:
Angels have great knowledge but are not omniscient and are not to be worshiped:
First Peter 3:22 “who is at the right hand of God, having gone into Heaven, where the angels and authorities and powers are being subjected to Him.”
Revelation 22:8-9 “And I, John, saw and heard these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel showing me these things. Then he said to me, Behold! See, do not do it! For I am your fellow-servant, and of your brothers the prophets, and of those who keep the Words of this Book. Do worship to God.”
Angels were created through the Son of God:
Colossians 1:16 “For all things were created in Him, the things in the heavens, and the things on the earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers, all things were created through Him and for Him.”
Angels are great in might and power:
Acts 5:19 “But the angel of the Lord opened the prison doors by night and brought them out, and said…”
Second Thessalonians 1:7 “and to give rest with us to you who are troubled, at the revealing of the Lord Jesus from Heaven with the angels of His power.”
Angels excel in strength:
Psalm 103:20 “Bless Jehovah, O angels of His, who excel in strength, who do His command, listening to the voice of His Word.”
Angels are active in the lives of individuals, families, churches, cities and nations:
Daniel 10:10 “And behold, a hand touched me, which set me shaking on my knees and the palms of my hands.”
Revelation 2:1 “To the angel of the church of Ephesus write: He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands, says these things.”
Angels watch over our children:
Matthew 18:10 “Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I say to you that in Heaven their angels always behold the face of My Father in Heaven.”
Angers do not marry or die:
Matthew 22:30 “For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in Heaven.”
Angels are glorious beings:
Daniel 6:22 “My God has sent His Angel, and has shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not hurt me, because before Him purity was found in me. And also before you, O king, I have done no harm.”
Matthew 28:2-3 “And behold, a great earthquake occurred! For coming down from Heaven, and coming up, an angel of the Lord rolled back the stone from the door and was sitting on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.”
Angels can listen to our conversations:
Daniel 10:12 “Then he said to me, Do not fear, Daniel; for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and to chasten yourself before your God, your words were heard. And I have come for your words.”
Angels have rank and orders, all of which are subject to Jesus Christ:
Hebrews 1:6 “And again, when He brings in the First-born into the world, He says, “And let all the angels of God worship Him.”
Angels exist in countless numbers:
Hebrews 12:22 “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels.”
Angels are ministering spirits to assist the heirs of salvation:
First Kings 19:5-8 “And as he lay and slept under a broom tree, behold, then an angel touched him and said to him, Arise, eat. And he looked, and, behold, a cake was baked on the coals, and a jug of water at his head. And he ate and drank, and lay down again. And the angel of Jehovah came to him the second time and touched him, and said, Arise, eat, because the journey is too great for you. And he arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God.”
Second Kings 6:15-17 “And the servant of the man of God arose early and went out. And, behold, an army surrounded the city, and horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, Alas, my master! What shall we do?
And he answered, Do not fear, for those with us are more than those with them.
And Elisha prayed and said, I pray You, Jehovah, open his eyes so that he may see. And Jehovah opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.”
Psalm 91:11 “For He shall give His angels charge over You, to keep You in all Your ways.”
Acts 5:19 “But the angel of the Lord opened the prison doors by night and brought them out, and said.”
Acts 12:8-11 “And the angel said to him, Gird yourself and put on your sandals. And he did so. And he says to him, Throw your robe around you and follow me. And he went out and followed him. And he did not know that this happening through the angel was true, but thought he saw a vision.
When they were past the first and second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened to them of its own accord. And they went out and passed on through one street. And immediately the angel departed from him.
And having come to himself, Peter said, Now I know surely that the Lord has sent His angel and has delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
Acts 27:23-24 “For tonight an angel of God stood beside me, whose I am and whom I serve, saying, Fear not, Paul! You must stand before Caesar. And behold! God has given you all those who sail with you.”
Angels offer comfort to God’s people in times of trouble:
Luke 1:11 “And an angel of the Lord appeared to him as he was standing on the right of the altar of incense.”
Angels can carry out the judgements of God:
Genesis 19:13 “For we will destroy this place because great is the cry of them before the face of Jehovah. And Jehovah has sent us to destroy it.”
Matthew 13:47 “Again, the kingdom of Heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea, and gathered some of every kind.”
Revelation 15:1 “And I saw another sign in Heaven, great and marvellous: seven angels with the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.”
Angels can rescue people in danger:
Genesis 19:15 “And when the dawn rose up, then the angels hurried Lot, saying, Rise up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the iniquity of the city.”
Acts 12:7 “And behold! An angel of the Lord stood by, and a light shone in the building. And striking Peter’s side, he raised him up, saying, Rise up quickly! And his chains fell off his hands.”
Angels surround and protect those who fear the Lord:
Psalm 34:7 “The Angel of Jehovah camps round about those who fear Him, and delivers them.”
Angels receive the spirits of righteous people at their deaths:
Luke 16:22 “And it happened that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom. The rich one also died and was buried.”
Angels rejoice when we repent:
Luke 15:10 “Likewise I say to you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Angels will accompany the Lord when He returns to the earth:
Matthew 25:31-32 “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He shall sit on the throne of His glory. And all nations shall be gathered before Him. And He shall separate them from one another, as a shepherd divides the sheep from the goats.”
Angels will separate the children of the Kingdom from the children of the wicked one:
Matthew 13:41 “The Son of Man shall send out His angels, and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who do iniquity.”
Angels show up in direct answer to prayer:
Acts 10:3-4 “About the ninth hour of the day he saw plainly in a vision an angel of God coming to him and saying to him, Cornelius!
And he was gazing at him, and becoming terrified, he said, What is it, lord? And he said to him, Your prayers and your merciful deeds have come up for a memorial before God.”
Angels are awesome, mighty and powerful beings:
Psalm 103:20 “Bless Jehovah, O angels of His, who excel in strength, who do His command, listening to the voice of His Word.”
Angels guard the city gates of God:
Revelation 21:12 “And it had a great and high wall, with twelve gates. And on the gates were twelve angels, and having names inscribed, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel.”
Angels deliver God’s healing grace:
John 5:4 “For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and troubled the water. Then whoever first stepped in after the troubling of the water was made whole of whatever disease he had.”
Angels have been seen by men:
Genesis 32:1-2 “And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. And when Jacob saw them he said, This is God’s camp. And he called the name of that place Two Camps.”
Daniel 10:6 “His body also was like the beryl, and his face looked like lightning. And his eyes were like lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet in color were like polished bronze, and the voice of his words like the sound of a multitude.”
Luke 2:9, 13 “And lo, the angel of the Lord came on them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them. And they were grievously afraid….. .. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying.”
John 20:12 “And she saw two angels in white sitting there, the one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.”
Angels dwell in heaven:
Luke 2:13, 15 “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying……… And it happened as the angels departed from them into Heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Indeed, let us go to Bethlehem and see this thing which has happened, which the Lord made known to us.”
Angels bring refreshment to the saints who are engaged in spiritual battle:
Daniel 10:17-19 “For how can the servant of my lord talk with my lord? For as for me, immediately there remained no strength in me, nor is there breath left in me. Then again one like a man in form came and touched me, and he made me stronger and said, O man greatly beloved, do not fear. Peace to you; be strong; yes, be strong. And when he had spoken to me, I was made stronger, and I said, Speak my lord, for you have made me stronger.”
Amen.
