A Scripture Out of Context
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” John 14:12-13
Over the years many Christians have quoted this scripture out of context by referring to it on a surface level as a meaning of operating in signs, gifts, and miracles.
Then later wonder why the things asked for were not given.
The “works” that Jesus referred to were His actions and duties; in other words, the way He operated while He walked the earth.
Jesus taught, healed, and delivered (all for FREE by the way). He walked in unconditional love and condemned no one.
He made no reputation for Himself; all glory went to the Father. He came to serve; he was humble, meek, and compromised for no one.
These were the “works” of Christ. And Jesus said that those who believe in Him will also do as He did, and even greater. And because of this, anything they would ask for, it would be granted to them.
Why? Because one had proven themselves to be in line with the example of Christ.
So if you’re not walking in the footsteps of Jesus (operating in His works), then you cannot expect your superficial prayers to be answered. And most Christians are all about ‘me’ when they pray:
Bless Me
Protect Me
Heal Me
Deliver Me
Give Me
Me, me, me!
Yet what have you given to Him and for Him?
Jesus said, “If anyone desire to come after Me, they must deny themselves, take up their cross and follow Me,” (Matthew 16:24).
So in order to have the things asked for granted to you, one must first come in line with the desires of Christ, which means giving up one’s self.
Once you die to self, your prayers are no longer self-gratified, thus allowing The Spirit of The LORD to give what is asked, because He knows He will be glorified in it.

Amen! I agree with this perfect explanation and sound doctrine. What you’ve said, makes perfectly good sense, when the Holy Spirit shines insight on such wholesomeness of God’s Word – when studied thoroughly, led by the Spirit, God will bring great and complete understanding, I totally believe.
Thank you,for sharing and elaborating on this section of scripture, Minister Mena Lee Jones! God bless you and this great understanding of scripture – because I’ve always felt within my spirit, that there was a much deeper, yet simplified understanding of this passage of God’s scripture – that has been complicated, even debated over the years. God bless, Shalom!♥️
Thank you for highlighting that Jesus always did it for “FREE”! Never a cover charge, no “blessing if” you buy His book, none of this. Of course people need money to live and Jesus himself worked as a carpenter for some time apparently but, making money off the works of GOD?? Seems problematic. I guess it is more complicated than I am allowing but people should be careful about how they make their living.
