A More Sure Word of Prophecy
God’s Word Has Full Authority! Study 1
Scripture text:
“For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our LORD Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.
For He received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to Him from the excellent glory, this is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with Him in the holy mount.
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost,” 2 Peter 5:16-21 KJV.
Our LORD has given to us a most wonderful heritage and one which can be trusted.
Peter wrote in his second book of Scripture that we [the apostles] were not following cunningly devised fables as some men may imagine, but wanted us to know we have them who were eye witnesses of the LORD’s majesty.
It definitely would have been wonderful to have been there that day and with our own eyes behold the LORD Jesus Christ himself as he taught in the streets and from place to place.
To have seen his miracles first hand would have been most rewarding for sure. The mere fact that the Apostle Paul and the other apostles were not following some man made story made up in a religious garb, is true because they were telling forth what they had seen with their own eyes.
Now in turn they are delivering unto us a record from eye witness accounts. Does this not greatly enhance the story and give us sure faith in the gospel stories written by the apostles?
Even as eyewitness Peter wanted to explain something more: he explained we have something even greater than an eye witness account, but is the written Word of God which was written by holy men of God being moved by the holy ghost was even more trustworthy!
The writers of the Word of God, the Bible, real men, but they were filled with the Holy Spirit when they wrote the words. These men did not write their opinions and deductions of a religious study, but they wrote what the heard the Holy Spirit speak to them to write.
The written Word is then like light shining in a dark place. Peter went on to explain that it will shine until the very day dawn when Jesus Christ himself returns and we all know of Him as He arises in our hearts in presence reality.
I am fearful that many men do not fully understand or comprehend just how great is the Word of God, God’s Holy Bible which we hold in their hands. Many talk about it as being a holy book, but somehow they yet long for something more, even more tangible which they can touch and hold with greater confidence. Thus many are set searching for their imagined greater pursuit of seeing the LORD and talking with him in person.
Many years may go by as men search for what they desire, thinking it to be of greater value, never fully realizing just what it is they are holding in their hands. Many times men find themselves engrossed in prayer and searching through religious expression, yet never realizing that they possess [in their hands the tangible and literal, and very real, words of God] in their hands.
The problem may be that they are thinking the Bible is written by men and only has some reference to the actual LORD himself. Many think that the Bible does in some places contain the words of God, yet thinking they must discover within the book, which is and which is not, His very words.
Doubt is upon their heart as they think: “If I could only see Him and speak to Him myself, then I would know for sure.” Somehow they do not think they can be sure unless they can see Him or touch Him. Somehow the written word seems less consequential than the actual meeting and experiencing the LORD.
All the while, He is right there in the written words, which are not of some mere men writing, but are literally him speaking.
I will never forget my God encounter in the desert in 1999 when I heard Him speak outright to me and I experienced Him in His real person. I had gone up on the mountain early in the morning to pray at my altar and as I begin to pray, suddenly, I was caught away to stand before Him.
I had been kneeling down at the altar, but all at once I was standing before Him with my Bible in my hand. He said in a very clear voice to me: “What is that in your hand?”
I answered, “LORD it is your Word, the Bible.” He said with a very loud voice which seemed to just carry me away like a mighty rush of wind and caused me to be take flight, He said: “It is My Word! You have wanted Me to talk to you all your life and have sought for Me over and over. Yet all the wile you have held in your hand My very words. These words are just as true as My spoken words now.”
I trembled and shook with understanding. Suddenly my whole attitude and understanding changed [my knowing changed] toward the Bible; it was of sure, His very words!
Ever since that day I have approached it [opening its pages with expectation and excitement] knowing that I was fixing to hear God’s very words to me! I have never gotten over this experience.
The Book has became so precious to me after that day, I would never be or go anywhere without it, and even at night, I slept with the book beside me in the bed. I would lay there in the dark and put my hand upon the now most precious Word and within, I felt His glorious assurance and comfort flooding my soul.
Needless to say, my whole faith in the book of God, His Word, has taken on new meaning. Now, I can simply open it and begin to read anywhere in the Book and I know it is His Word. The lines jump out with meaning I never felt before, and I have found my eyes opened to much truth I have in the past overlooked wondering about what I was reading.
The first attack of the enemy is to try to discredit God’s word, the Holy Bible.
I want you to consider the first thing that the devil lied about to Eve in the Garden of Eden, as he persuaded her to disobey the LORDs command to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eve said to the devil, “God said that we could not eat of this tree and if we did we would die!”
Then he said to her, “Oh surely now, you will not die? Oh go ahead and eat of it, it is good for food and it will make you wise. Your God wants to keep you from eating of the tree because He wants to keep you from some good thing.”
The fact is recorded that the first lie was concerning God’s word to Eve. The devil will first cause all who get a Bible to doubt its validity and to doubt God said it or meant what He said.
The reason men do not take the Bible seriously is because of the devil’s lie [when he questioned God]. Even today, the sneaky old serpent is still lying to men telling them [whispering in their ear] that the Bible is not important and cannot be trusted, nor relied upon as authoritative.
If the devil can convince men to not read the Book in faith, believing it to be the very words of God, he can hide them from true faith, because the fact is: faith comes to us by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.
Many men have failed to gain saving faith because they have been led to believe that the Bible is just another book written by men, or that it has somehow been corrupted and cannot be trusted.
This beginning, as one starts out to search for truth, will cause them to trust other things rather than the word of God. It is at this point that the devil will deceive them with feelings [religious spirits]. The feelings he gives are not produced by God’s presence or approval but by a false feeling.
Years ago I went to Idaho and Utah as a home missionary. I felt called of God to go to Mormon land and witness [start churches] to the Mormons. While I was there working and witnessing to the Mormons, I was confronted by a Mormon missionary who tried to reason with me about the validity of the book of Mormon.
He said to me: “Let me tell you how you can know for sure if the book of Mormon is a true book of God or not.” He continued to tell me: “If you will read the book of Mormon and then pray, saying, ‘Is this book true?’ you will then feel a burning sensation down inside and then you will know it is truly the words of God.”
That day I said to him in return answer, that was what the devil did to Eve. He told her she would feel good. Feelings then, are the devil’s ploy to destroy people and to lead them from the truth.
If the devil can get men to seek a feeling, they will never find faith, because faith is not a feeling, it is believing God’s word.
Let us go back again to study the text:
The Apostle Peter said in his writing, “We have a more sure word of prophecy, whereunto ye do well to take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place…..” Again I emphasize, Peter was an eyewitness to the Glory of the LORD himself, yet Peter wrote: “I have a more sure word of prophecy [in my hands] therefore I declare to you as an eyewitness; read it in faith knowing it is God’s most Holy Word.”
Through the years as a minister, I have learned that there is nothing that will work like the Word of God. If I go and give the Word of God straight from the Book and speak it clearly. That Word will work and most wonderfully, but when I speak other words I find men looking at me as if to say: “I don’t understand!”
The words I speak must be mixed with the Word of God and spoken by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is written very clearly that faith saves men as they are drawn by the Holy Spirit through the Word. Faith must come from hearing.
In Romans 10 it asks clearly, “How can men be saved without a preacher?” But not just any preacher will do, because what he meant was: how can men be saved without a Bible preacher preaching the Word? Men will not be converted to true faith in the LORD, without the word spoken clearly.
Again, we understand the teaching about the gospel message. The Word says concerning the preaching of the gospel [the distinct teaching of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins] that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation.
It is not the speaking of many words and religious dogma that saves men to life changing faith, but it is the clear preaching of the message of the gospel [the clear presentation of what Jesus Christ did for sinners on his cross and by His death and resurrection] that does the job and will powerfully change the sinner to a saint.
“Now brothers and sisters, let me remind you [once again] of the good news [of salvation] which I preached to you, which you welcomed and accepted and on which you stand [by faith]. By this faith you are saved [reborn from above — spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for his purpose], if you hold firmly to the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain [just superficially and without complete commitment].
For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to [that which] the scriptures [foretold], and that he was buried, and that he was [bodily] raised on the third day according to [that which] the scriptures [foretold], and that He appeared to Cephas (peter), then to the twelve.
After that he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, the majority of whom are still alive, but some have fallen asleep [in death]. Then He was seen by James, then by all the apostles, and last of all, as to one untimely (prematurely, traumatically) born, He appeared to me also,” 1 Corinthians 15:1-6 AMP.

“…opening its pages with expectation and excitement” – this speaks volumes to me.. I love you, dear brother ! I will return to your article later today, I am just on the way to the city to meet a female friend who asked me for help concerning an important official letter in my German mother tongue. I understand you so well ! I have the Holy Bible with me as often it is possible, and on cell phone, of course, too. In the nights near the pillow, too. I KNOW how HE speaks directly into every situation. HE does not fail.
