Message
Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to reflect on the blessings of the past year. The good news is we don’t have to give thanks just on Thanksgiving — we can practice gratitude every day!
With everything going on in the world, this is an important key to breakthrough that we need right now.
This week, I want to share a few practical tips to cultivate an attitude of gratitude in your daily life.
The power of giving thanks
“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.” Psalm 100:4 NIV.
One of the first steps to entering into God’s presence is to give thanks.
This doesn’t always come naturally to us — we have to take practical action to choose gratitude.
As we reflect on The LORD’s goodness and the amazing things He has already done, it can position us to receive more from God.
When we look at the things The LORD has not done yet, it is easy to complain and get our hope deferred; however, by renewing our minds with thankfulness, we can start to see our situation powerfully shift.
Gratitude heals our hearts, gives us back our hope and helps us get into God’s presence with greater ease!
3 keys of gratitude
Life can get busy, and we can forget to slow down and thank God for the big things and the little things. Here are three practical ways to have an attitude of gratitude every day.
1. Make a list of 10 things you are grateful for.
You can add to this list, it doesn’t have to be just 10 things — but writing them down will help you remember. The more blessings you can think of, the more your attitude will shift and you’ll get a heavenly perspective.
I encourage you to put your gratitude list where you will see it throughout the day. You can put sticky notes on your mirror, reminders in your phone, or notecards in your Bible. Share your list with friends and family and encourage them to do the same.
2. Replace complaining with gratitude.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 NIV.
Reading and declaring the Word of God is a major key in renewing our minds. Find Bible verses that align with what you are thankful for and declare them out loud. Doing this will help engage your mind, heart, and spirit.
As you reflect on God’s Word and hold gratitude in your heart, your complaining will begin to change toward positive, hopeful talk. It takes time, so be patient with yourself. You can do it!
3. Practice radical generosity.
“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:38 NIV
Showing generosity is a great way to cultivate gratitude. This holiday season, consider giving a special gift to your church, a ministry, nonprofit or someone in need. Giving to others shows The LORD you are thankful for all He has given you!
There is a spiritual principle of sowing and reaping. As you give, it will be given back to you like it says in Luke 6:38.
Put it into practice
To help carry you through this time of transition, I encourage you to make it a habit of putting on an attitude of gratitude.
You will see your joy and peace increase as you do this no matter your current situation.
Blessings,
~ Doug Addison
